Default Can you use Cruise Control with a Haltech?

As per above, can you use cruise-control with the Haltech ECU or is the cruise control computer a separate unit?

Thanks.

Nice one! What dictates whether an engine has cruise control or not though, it's the ECU isn't it?

You need the stock ECU and the sensors the ECU reads to maintain cruise and for those sensors to read in spec (e.g. a rear drive gear swap may kill your cruise control).

So if I've a complete VQ35DE with all the trimmings with the 6-speed manual gearbox and a Haltech ECU, I won't be able to have cruise-control as a function? The Haltech won't read the stock sensors?

Your cruise control should work fine!

You use the Haltech in addition to the stock ECU.

I have a Haltech and 4.08 rear gears on a 6mt G35 Coupe and my cruise control works fine.

Haltech's a standalone - how can it work with the stock ECU? I don't have a stock ECU to begin with either..?! :S

Haltech works in paralelle with the stock ecu. Some functions such as cruise continue to to run through the stock unit where other functions such as the control of the air/fuel ratios bypass the stock unit all together and are controlled solely by the haltech.

That's how I understand it. Correct me if I'm wrong. Sorry for the spelling.

The Haltech is a full standalone for Air/Fuel, ignition and cam timing. The OEM ECU still controls other functions like cruise control, drive by wire, and the CAN Bus for gauges and things.

Whoever said stock ECU meant OEM ECU. My ECU is flashed with Osiris and it works fine with my Haltech.

Have you read Hal's thread on the Haltech? It has some great information in it.

So by "full standalone for AFR etc" you mean it's not a piggyback in that respect but to actually control the car you still need the stock ECU? That's no use to me so if that is true. I've asked on that thread you've highlighted just to confirm from the sellers. Thanks for that link!

If you're using the VQ and tranny in a different vehicle, like a sandrail or a race car of some type, the Haltech is all you need. If you're using it in a Z, you also need a stock ECU. The Haltech is a standalone engine management unit. This means it handles all of the functions to make the engine run. However, in newer cars, like the Z, the OEM ECU doesn't just control the engine. All vehicle functions pass through the ECU... cruise, climate control, gauges, traction control, ABS, etc... The Haltech does not have the ability to control these functions. You need to retain the stock ECU to operate the non-engine functions of the car.

I now see (from the other thread) that you want to transplant the VQ into something else. We would have given you better answers if you would have mentioned that here.

Anyway, good luck...

Apologies - the explanation's on the other thread too.

So to get the ABS to continue to work in my 200SX, I need a stock Z ECU?

No. You'll either need the stock 200SX ECU if the ABS is electronic, or just the Haltech if your ABS is mechanical or has it's own control unit.

I've just got word the ABS in the 200SX is controlled by a separate unit so I'm ok there - I'll just live without cruise-control for now until I get the rest of the project up & running. Thanks all!
