Default UpRev Installed

Uploaded the Uprev maps in my 05 35th Revup 6sp and the process went very well with no issues. Engine feels nice and has good smooth and consistent power.

Maps are:
1 -stock
2- optimized stock
3 -performance tune 91 octane
4- performance tune 93 octane
5 -valet

Mods are MREV2, 5/16, popcharger and nismo exhaust. I only run 93 octane - Sunoco or BP.

After driving a few days between map #2 and #3, I have noticed a second or two of pre-detonation ping (knock) when you accelerate from a steady RPM. It only happens after accelerating from a steady RPM. In other words, you can be steady at 3k +/- and hit the gas moderately and the pre-detonation knock happens for a second then clears up. It does not ping or knock during steady or hard acceleration, it only occurs if you hit the gas after it is been at a steady RPM for a few seconds.

Has anyone else experienced this and what's the fix? Or is it normal? I do not want to damage valves with pre-detonation.
Thanks for any helpful input.

So how much faster does the car feel on the 93 map? Is it worth the money? Im on the fence on which one to get.

not normal
so you only get pinging when running the optimized stock or performance 91 on 93 gas?
or do you also ping with the performance 93 map?

maybe they could fix it up with an e-tune. or you can take it to a local uprev tuner and i'm sure they could fix it up

If you do some data logging I can look at the output file for you. It's definitely not normal.

Should include exactly what you're talking about, cruising for a few minute then stomp on it.

Default uprev

thanks for the replies. i'm very happy with uprev so far, it definately feels more peppy, it's probably because every car is a little different and you're probably right, an etune might solve it. if i understand correctly, for each map, uprev reprograms the ecu with new targets that are "locked in". it may take a while driving the car for the ecu to adjust to the new targets. i've basically been running on map 2 (optimized stock), but did switch to map 3 (performance tune on 91 octane) for a day or so. I haven't run it on map 4 (93 performance) because i heard the ping - maybe i should. you know how you can hear every sound your car makes when you are cruising beside a barrier or guard rail? that's really the only time I can hear the ping, and again it's only after a steady rpm and you gas it (either lightly or aggressively) and it only pings for a second and clears right up. normal driving, accelerating hard or light doesn't ping. wierd. I emailed uprev to see what they say. I've never cleaned the MAF and ran a K&N in the stock box before the pop charger, am thinking maybe the MAF needs cleaning because prior to getting uprev i noticed a slight idle change - just a little rougher than when it was new. My audi was very sensitive to any film from the K&N oil and cleaning the MAF made a huge improvement. Also i have 22k and it may be time for some new plugs too. So again, i'll probably get that stuff done then see how it does and do the etune.
thanks!

Plugs are rated for 100k. I changed mine at 50K and they looked great still, I woundnt waste my money. Also K&N oil doent screw up Maf sensors. Its a myth, it is possible maybe from over-oilig them but I doubt it.

I would go run the snot out of it on the 93 map and see what it does. You payed for a tune so run the best map!

Maybe if Rich/Jared/Matt are reading, I bumped up a guys timing tonight. Just wanted to let you know that I installed the UpRev beta suite (as I am a part of) no problem but when it came to installing the drivers for the USB, it crashed my Vista laptop 100%. I had to borrow my roommates XP to get everything working.

So when is Vista support going to be available?

if you are experiencing a problem, especially one as serious as detonation. why would you go run the snot out of the car, without gettign ti resolved first??

i would contact uprev, and see what they suggest. chances are they will get you to datalog, and then change somethings for you. that is probably less of a hassle then replacing some pistons.

Yes, you are right Someguy350 - you know there's the emotional desire to run the snot out of it and boy that sounds nice while sitting behind the keyboard at the computer, and then there's the intellectual side of things that dictate otherwise once behind the wheel. The balance of those two factors makes the Z one fun car.

I have contacted UpRev by PM but have not heard from them for a few days -(a little dissappointing). I thought I would post here to see if others had experienced this issue. I realize I need to run some logs and make some phone calls. Thanks for the rational thinking. My Z is much too nice to destroy. Detonation is bad for sure, but again, it's not all the time, it only occurs for a second and only after being at a steady RPM. It clears up immediately and stays corrected during aggressive or light acceleration. So while it's something that must be corrected, it is not detonation that occurs all the time, that would be serious. Thanks again.

If its detonation for sure then the engines knock sensors are picking it up and kicking back the timing for sure. Sounds like your just dumping to much fuel all at once and its detonating. Does it do this on the 93 map?

Twitch579, maybe I'm too conservative for my own good but when I heard the detonation I elected not to run it on the 93 map because i thought it might make it worse, I have mostly run it on the optimized stock map and the 91 map for a day or two of driving. Would running on the 93 map possibly run a leaner mixture thus helping resolve the issue IF it is getting too much fuel dumped in like you say?

if you are experiencing detonation, then dont run the 93 map. it will advance the timing even farther, which means even worse detonation.

even if your knock sensors are picking it up, and dialing back the timing. the sensors must really suck, if it gets to the point where you can distinctly notice detonation. i dont have much experience with nissans. so maybe thats just how the knock sensors are on this car.

Vista support is there. Jared has a Vista laptop for tuning. As far as being unstable and crashing, that is also a feature of Vista.

Vista and it's undocumented features. How great is that.

We have an e-mail and also a phone, PM's rarely get checked and I think I'm just going to turn them off at this point. Please send a log file from Cipher with your description to jared@uprev.com, we want to get this solved as soon as possible. That way he can check it and also be able to contact you. If your car is pinging, your ECU will still default to a safer timing map and on a stock motor should be ok, I just wouldn't personally try to make it ping to be on the safe side. Please e-mail him so that he can check into it on Monday for you.

Oh it's plenty of fun. I refuse to use it myself, XP works, the prettiness of Vista isn't worth the many hassles. Jared doesn't have a choice, his new laptop doesn't have XP drivers available so it only runs Vista. The last two weeks here I think he's had all of 14-16 hours of computer use because it's been fixed and re-installed and fixed and fixed and backed up and re-installed and serviced and re-installed and fixed ad infinitum

Odd, with Vista it could be that you have something else installed that doesn't like our driver, or that some piece of hardware is not comfortable with it. Welcome to Microsoft beta purchase program. It's like Windows ME all over again, they are already talking about Windows 7 fixing all these problems. Exactly the same as when they put out ME and started talking about how much better XP was going to be.
