Where to find a scanner/diagnostic tool?
Hey guys,
New owner of a Z and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I would like to pull engine codes myself so that I don't get ripped off by a mechanic/stealership. I don't want to bring the Z in and asking them to do an inspection. Don't want to get ripped off and have them tell me something is wrong with this and that when there really isn't anything wrong. I'm a college student so, just want to save some money.
Its a stock 03 with about 70,000K miles, just got a great deal on it and had to buy
So yea, what is the best way to pull engine codes yourself?

the cheapest way is to go to a local auto parts store, they almost all have the scanners and will pull the code and tell you what it means for free (since they want you to buy parts from them).
i think you will pull codes so rarely that it may not be worth the investment to buy your own.

You have to watch with the 350Z. The Genisis that I use at my shop won't even read the codes for a 350Z, so the local stores may or may not be able to help you.

Cipher is an awesome Nissan-specific diagnostic tool. It will show your codes with description, allow you to reset, datalog, view all the sensors, etc. It is a great item to have around if you plan to mod your 350z.

I don't plan to mod for awhile. But, that sounds great, codes with descriptions, sounds better than looking up what a code means if I use a generic OBDII scanner. I'll look into both options!
Thanks all for the prompt responses!

Yea I just bought a used Z so I wanted to pull codes instead of paying for a full inspection.
