Bought Netbook for Tuning
I've been thinking about getting one, too... I have an old Dell Inspiron 5000 with a Pentium III and 512mb of memory... It works fine, but it's bounced around my car a few times and has a few nicks in it.
My old Dell was around $3000 when new. I wouldn't feel too bad about spending $299 for one now... I'd probably get the 1gb memory upgrade and the 16gb hard disk upgrade... I can't be having my cell phone have more storage than my netbook...
If you want to spend a little more (okay, a lot more) for even greater flexibility in use (and more bling) you should check out the Fujitsu convertible tablets:

I have the predecessor of this model, a p1610, which I bought to use as a platform for a gps navigation system in my plane and car, as well as a general use notebook. Same size (I believe) as the netbooks, with the advantage of being convertible to tablet configuration, which works great in a vehicle. Mounts are available from RAM:

With these mounts, you can have the computer accessible and visible while driving. Great setup for datalogging, I would imagine. A bump case is also available which protects the computer but leaves the screen visible and all buttons accessible in either notebook or tablet mode. I sometimes use this in the plane, strapped to my leg with a kneeboard. Oh...these things are tough, too; I dropped mine off a 40 inch counter the other day and it never skipped a beat
For what it's worth, I'm running Garmin PC mobile in the car/truck for gps (windshield suction mount for the computer) and Mountainscope moving map software in the airplane (yoke mount or kneeboard mount in the bump case) Both are great programs.

Asus 1000HE netbook is the best rated netbook right now period. Best package with best battery life and best keyboard.
We are about to purchase 12 for my company so our field staff can give them a try. I have one myself and love the little thing. 7 hours battery life standard is the truth, and a keyboard like a MAC so you can type easy. Bluetooth, and Wireless N. Love it!
Plus it's only $379-399 at vendors with Windows XP Home. Upgrade to 2 gigs of ram for $25 bucks and runs Windows 7 like a champ.

Not the same one. The Asus 1000HE "HE" is the thing to look at. It has the Wireless-N and Bluetooth and N280 processor.

The reason I'm looking at Frys is becasue they often have sales and they are local so I can pick up in person and not deal with shipping
Frys doesn’t have the HE - the one I listed is the closest they have... I'm not all that concerned about wireless or Bluetooth - but the processor is an issue... is N280 considerably better then N270?
