UTEC: Insight on going to "Open Loop" for NA Car
Hi,
I've been running a UTEC with MAF based load sensing for a while now and have achieved an optimal tune IMHO. I did this with the "Open Loop" disabled since it was easy and recommended in the manual for a mild tune. I do some racing, and wish to use this to raise the RPM limit to 6900. It would help in certain spots on the track where I run out of RPMs but don't want to shift just before dropping the revs for a turn. Knowing the risks, I'm willing to give it a shot, not too crazy, just a few hundred RPMs.
Looking at the manual, it appears that you just have to enable the open loop mode, change the RPM setting, and that's it. I already have fuel and timing maps set up with a conservative guess as to what they should be. Since I am still using the MAF sensor, nothing else should need to be adjusted. Is this correct? Are there dangers or variables I'm not taking into account?

I did some research and found out on my own, in case anyone has the same question down the line. With "open loop" disabled, the UTEC uses the OEM fuel map. I have heard that this fuel map changes, so apparently there is a way to nail it down without gwtting a Technosquare or other reflash.
In "Open loop", the UTEC uses it's own proprietary base map instead of the OEM computer. I copied my existing map to a new location and began tuning from there. In my case, the UTEC map wes very rich, like 11.1-1 AFR. It took quite a few runs to get it tuned to 12.8-1.
If anyone is annoyed with allegedly changing OEM maps, maybe enabling the "open loop" feature will cure this.
