listening is the best if you know what it sounds like. Stock knock sensor sucks. Every engine is different so the stock settings don't always conform to your exact engine.
What about 5k+ rpm range. Can you still recognize knock between all that engine noise?
well, listening to knock should be performed by someone who is trained. Knock has a distinctive sound and is very noticeable over normal engine noises.
I would not rely on the crappy knock sensors we have in these cars. The knock tables aren't set up properly and a lot of engine noise is picked up. It also doesn't help that the ecu is only programmed to use the knock sensor up to 5000 rpm.
