Has anyone noticed the CobbTuning Blog for the SEMA show this year?



For this year’s SEMA show, we plan on displaying a Infiniti (Nissan) vehicle along side our new Subaru vehicle. We started tinkering with the Nissan 350Z when they hit showroom floors back in 2003. We actually designed and tested several parts then, but lacked the ability to produce/support them due to lack of resources. The shop officially owned a 2006 350Z in order to begin daily real-world testing of product which is now owned by one of our extremely talented hard-parts engineer, Dave. When the all-new G37 was released this year, the temptation was far too great to keep our Nissan interest on the backburner. Expanding resources in hand, we’ve decided we can give the Nissan platforms our attention without sacrificing the attention we’ve already dedicate to other activities.
Our G37 is a fully loaded Sports model. 6MT, Navi, etc. Our goal is to tune the G37 as a vehicle capable of competing with the BMW 3-series vehicles, including the new M3. With a couple of engineers on staff as BMW M3 owners, as well as several other German car owners, we know our goals will not be gifted to us simply because we’re fans of these vehicles. No, it must be earned. That’s a great thing about our company, there’s no blind loyalty…it must be earned.

second, with the heat shields that close to the element, it will heat soak after a while and then radiate heat right next to the filter, which will get sucked in
they'll prolly make good power (for an intake) on a dyno where heat soak isn't really and issue and the car can be given plenty of time to cool down. i'm guessing these also have some sore of air horn or velocity stack like cobb's intake for other cars, that will help make power on the dyno
i do like the fact that they have silicone hoses though

I'm not a big fan of the metal heat shields. I really like either OEM design or plastic box/CF designed boxes. They have the best heat resistant materials and perform the best under extreme driving conditions.
If I felt like wasting the money, I'd dyno my fujita's against the stock airboxes with the "funnels" removed using the AP to tune the a/f. I somehow doubt a set of intakes yield any gains at all on this car. Pull the funnels out and you basically have yourself a set of stillen intakes rofl. Just drop in better filters and you're set. One of the best n/a times on this site is running a modded stock airbox (aceman).

Yup +1 million.
There are a few drawbacks to the stock design though. The stock piping is a bit small, if you increase the piping there is a small gain. Also the opening of the OEM airbox is a bit small and also the OEM filter element sucks. So if those things can be replaced gains will be realized. OEM boxes on the 350z's are very well designed though, kudos to nissan for the design.
To increase the piping size you need a tune since you'll alter the MAF readings. That's why the aftermarket intakes don't make power for squat... they keep the maf housing are the stockish size with larger piping after and before it. They sound cool and that's it. If you want cool sound, remove the snorkels and you're set.
The stock piping on the HR's has a silencer box on each side. These silencer boxes rob hp. I know the de motor g35's had em and the 350z's didn't. It sucks that our ecu's are so damn sensative to every little thing.

also, to me that whole argument is irrelevant, cause i need most of my power when i'm at the drag strip, and till i build up enough speed to get the air moving, i'm breathing hot air, at the launch, when it matters most
i remember someone from cobb posted that the intakes were gonna be fully enclosed like the stock one, so i was pretty disappointed when i first saw this design from them

Which is irrelevant. It won't radiate nearly enough to heat up the fresh air around the filter -- it doesn't pull air just by the shield.
but either way, i'm not a fan of the design, to me the jwt design looks much more fuctional, and if the heatsheild actually does go all the way up to the hood like they say it does, then that should take care of any heat soak problems.
the reason i'm questioning if jwt's heat shields go all they way up is cause aem/nismo claims that there's to do, but they don't, and thats proved if u look at the pics of them installed on the nismo z, cause they have another "strut" bar right above the heatshields, and the heatshields still fit fine
