Is the VQ35HR that much better than non-rev up?
yea they are the same.. except the 07s had a slave cylinder recall.. which nissan decided to remedy in 08... so get an 07 with a possible recall problem .. or an 08 which still hasn't had a recall yet .
i'll just add a couple facts regarding moding the DE vs the HR... they have pretty much the same heads... as in i haven't been able to find any difference beside maybe a different oil passage or something, in any case the revup DE's and the HR's both have the variable intake and exhaust and same size valves and whatnot. they both have the same displacement... obvious. the main difference with the HR's is that they have a slightly longer piston rod and a slightly taller cylinder. this just helps prevent piston slap. that being said the stock HR is always going to outperform a stock DE. so if you're going to buy a 2003 z in 2006 vs a 2007 z in 2010 the price difference is going to be negligible after inflation is factored in and you're essentially "waiting" longer for a better engine for the same price. that's only the engine though. the car has way different aesthetics (well, from a 350z enthusiast standpoint anyhow). they also have fairly different performance issues, mainly weight. so if you're going to buy a 2003 x in 2006 and start modding it for something other than enthusiastic street driving then you're going to run into the fact that the only advantages and HR has diminish to the point of being negligible very rapidly. as soon as you upgrade pretty much any DE internals you're going to have just as nice of an rpm range (though it might be slightly more harsh if you're used to driving a v12 or something and you're used to the smoothness) and the HP difference is going to become a non issue if you start doing anything to the engine performance-wise.
so in short, you'll pay the same for a better engine if you buy an HR z instead of a DE z at the same time after production, but after that the only real advantage the HR has is it looks WAY cooler in the engine bay and it's more refined.
i've thoroughly driven the 350z nonrevup, revup, hr, and 370z's and they each have their own little advantages. personally i went with the older less expensive car and spent the difference on mods and am currently lighter faster and more aggressive looking than any of the newer z's are stock and still paid a lot less than if i had bought one of the newer z's. so as some of the previous posters have eluded to... really the primary factor in the decision is what you're going to do with the car after you buy it... garage=>HR, track=>DE... at least until the price difference between the years goes away after like... another 10 years or so
im sure you've already made your decision but i hope i was able to explain some of the less obvious differences or pro's and con's

? How is that faster than any of the newer z's?With that being said.........your parts weight thread has been informing.
driving a DE and HR is really a night and day difference..
I know because when I drive my cousin's G coupe (DE motor) it literally feels like there's something wrong with the engine, like somethings holding it back, even though nothings wrong...
Its definitely faster than the new camaro ss. It was an automatic though.

. I ran against an new SS on friday..............that thing ran a 12.85 at 112.9
i don't know how fast they are from stops, but from a roll starting at 35ish he kept up with my car and after we hit 80ish I was easily gaining distance. I was surprised to tell you the truth, i thought he would spank me, but I forgot I had an HR.
we pulled over and he was cool guy we commented about each others cars, I lied to him saying I like the new camaro's (even though I don't) just to make him feel better for his purchase..

I'm not hating on you, but just trying to understand (p.s. any talk about street racing is a violation of the tou...........might want to delete
).
Ummm
........even the new camaro v-6's run 101-103 in the 1/4. My car is faster than yours, and that ss came by me at the 1000' mark with a purpose.

How fast is the new V6 camaro in the 1/4? 0-60 is?
When in doubt...... Just Mod even more and put your mind at ease!
I sure as hell don't want to be beat by a V6 Camaro
