Default OEM LSD Swap Question

I know i will probably get flamed for this but the reason im asking is because i couldn't find a specific answer to my question. And yes, I searched... Here I go.

I have a 2008 base model 350Z 6spd mt and I am interested in installing a LSD in it. now buying a used OEM lsd has peaked my interest based on price of the pumpkin. most of what ive found is a used 03-05-06 lsd with a 3.53 final drive. will this pumpkin fit on my 350 and has anyone had any experiences with this swap? and also if i do this swap is it worth installing a 4.08 FD?

most of the other posts ive seen are old and didnt apply to my situation is the reason for the question. thanks in advance.

I did the swap several years ago. 3.53 from an enthusiast into my base. 2 hour job in my driveway, and a big upgrade (later switched to a Quaife). Can't speak about a 4.08, and don't think it would be right for me.

awesome to hear! was your swap from an older model 350z? are they the same from the older ones? i have the chance to buy a used pumpkin for around $400. but am concerned about fitment.

I can't recall what year the vlsd was from, but it was actually from a G35. To get the same ratio, the donor needs to be a 6mt. No additional parts were needed, and it all bolted right in. I don't think the year matters, but newer is better. High-mileage vlsd's slowly turn into open diffs. $400 might be a bit too expensive, unless it's a proven low-mileage pumpkin.

All pumpkins from all years will fit, as long as you buy a complete pumpkin this the input shafts still installed.

I highly recommend changing the bushings before you install. I used Whiteline inserts since the bushings were fine on mine, but looking back I should have just went all the way this bushings. If it is a street car, go with Whiteline poly bushings.

my car had the stock vlsd, then i got lucky and picked up a quaife for...... $300 + my stock pumpkin , my buddy was trading his car in.....

Is this diff missing the input shafts? I just received from ebay. Will mine NOT switch over? I have a 08 base MT.

yep, missing the half shafts. i THINK one side will work, not sure about both. did the listing have the half shaft in the pic?

Base non-VLSD axle shafts will not work inside VLSD. You need to buy VLSD shafts or else your abs will constantly be on and will eventually blow. You can get away with using non-VLSD shafts but you'll need to disconnect that shaft sensor in the back of the pumpkin. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input. The seller is going to send me the shafts. Would you recommend I wait for those? Would that make the install much more difficult?

You may have another issue. I don't know what a 'GB' pumpkin is. My base open diff was stamped 'GC' and the VLSD was 'GD', so that may not be what you want. Might be a different ratio. The one in the eBay pic was a 'GD'.

Just found it - 'GB' is a 3.3 VLSD pumpkin. File a PayPal claim, get all your money back and stop getting f**cked by these asshats. Patience is a virtue, and there are other 3.5 VLSD's out there.

A 3.3 Vlsd like from a automatic... WTF!


They told me they'd send the axle stubs but yeah I'd rather have the higher gear ratio.

Just deal with someone else. They obviously don't know/care about this, and the may be sending you a diff with 200K miles on it. High-mileage VLSD's are junk, as the fluid breaks down and they turn into open diff's over time. Find one from a private seller who can show you the car it came out of and verify the miles, even if it's more $. Or, wait and buy an aftermarket diff and have it installed in your base pumpkin.

I'd wait and install it with the correct axle stubs, unless you don't mind the extra work.

And ya, GB means Automatic VLSD with 3.3 FD. Did the seller advertise the pumpkin as one off a 6MT?

I totally hate dealing with ebay or junk yards they constantly mislabel parts. I last oreder a lsd for my is300 off of there cam in open diff sent that **** back had to eat shipping though pretty pissed.

Well this place seems cool. They're gonna send me a different diff stamped GD with the axle stubs installed. They told me not to worry about sending the old one back. Sweet! We'll see if it gets here.
