Widest tires to go on OEM Track wheel?
I was a huge skeptic of running a larger-than-recommended tire, but I've been running 275 RA1s on my 8.5" rears with zero problems on track. They've stood up to agricultural excursions and many of running over curbs (hey, it's part of the track
).
).
This has been covered before:
But here goes, according to the manufacturers the widest size an 8.5" rim (your rears) will take is 255 - a 255 has a rim width range of from 8.5" to 10". So, that means a 255/45/18 on the rear. For the front, to maintain the stagger, put a 245/40/18 there. The 245 size has a rim width range of 8" to 9.5". Your front wheels are 8" wide.
Deviating from this will be dangerous (tire bulge) and you'll lose any type of tire warranty if you stray from published recommendations.

would it be a problem for me to run 225/45 up front and 255/45 in the back on the track wheels, or will it screw up the vdc/tcs? My fronts were replaced not so long ago because of feathering, and luckily the dealership put on s03's. now my rears are worn so i was hoping to just replace them and put on s03's for the rear also.
225/45/18 up front will be fine, as far as fitment goes, but you'll have more understeer than with the 245/40/18. The 225/45/18 is a brand new size in the SO3 line. The specs for it aren't listed in the spec sheet yet. But the sidewall height for a 225/45 and 245/40 is the same. You'll be fine.

lou - if that's in response to be i think you misunderstood me, or i'm misunderstanding your reply. I already have 225/45/18 BS S03's on my front wheels. And now i need to change only my rear tires. So I was wondering if I should just stick to getting 245/45/18, or should i step up in size and get 255/45/18. My concern is changing the stagger will mess up the VDC, but i'm not really sure if it's the stagger that affects the VDC or the overall diameter of the wheel and tire. Also now that you mention it, would having 225/45 up front and 255/45 increase understeer? If it makes any difference as far as understeer goes, i'm going to be installing a set of hotchkies sway bars in a couple weeks.
If your response wasn't to me, then woops i'm an idiot

No I was responding to you. Yep, I understand you have new 225/45/18s up front, and you want to keep them. And yes, the 255/45/18s will be OK in the rear, understeer will be increased a hair, but you'll be OK. If it will make you feel better, the M3 comes with 225s on the front and 255s in back, although they are not staggered, the combo works fine. The stagger affects the OD which affects the VDC. The difference in OD between the 245/45 and 255/45 is only .3". VDC wont notice it.
