Paint vs. Powdering
Powdercoat is a polyester powder, that when melted and cured is not necessarily thicker than paint, but is much more resistant to scratches and chips. It can also be just as glossy as paint. Many powders have a 95% gloss rating, and there are even 95% gloss clear coats you can put over a less glossy color. Personally, I use a flat or satin to bring the gloss down on some things I have coated.

powder coading is much strogner then paint. it can look just as nice. you can put any type of metallic flake in powdercoating but then you require clear coat.
i believe powdercoating actually static chargest the powder to the object and then it bakes the powder on to melt

One more question. Will I need to strip the wheels before I take them to the powdercoating place? I have the centers seperated from the outer lips since I have 3 piece wheels. I'm guessing you can't powdercoted over paint or, maybe you can?

You won't need to strip them, but i think the shop will. I may be mistaken, but i think for powedercoating, you need to sand off any coating, so that the powder will stick to the actual metal. Also any coating that is on there, will act as a blocker for the charged particles being attracted to each other.
ZU L8R,
I bought a set of Track Rays and they are being powdercoated today. Hope to check them out tomorrow and take some pics. They are metallic and WILL need a clear coat yet. I had to get them glass bead blasted which is sandblasting with glass for the most part. It is not quite as harsh as sand. I then had the lips polished to high gloss. Had to get some special tape and tape off the lip before powdercoat and will have to tape again before the clearcoat unless I clear the lips. I have some pics at home I'll post when the project is done. Powdercoating cost me $25 per wheel per coat. Total $200 for metallic with clearcoat.
Hope that helps,
Dan
