Vibration at high speed (65mph+) on highway w/ my new rims
I'm trying to figure out if I need to get my wheels rebalanced or not. I bought a new set of SSR GT-3's and put them on yesterday. The car drives fine until I get above around 65-70mph on the highway. At that point I start getting a crazy vibration coming from the rear wheels. Is this normal with wide rear rims? I have 10.5" rims in the rear, running a 275 width tire.
Is this a wheel balancing issue or is there something else I should look into? The wheels/tires were allegedly balanced by the shop I bought them from. I find it strange I don't get any vibration at around town speeds.

i agree... in the same order, put the wheels on a high-speed balancing machine and then make sure that you have hub-centric rings...
also... most common mistake, check tire pressure as well

Yeah, the tire pressure was too high, but I had checked/adjusted it before driving the car (for some reason the shop had inflated the tires to almost 44psi!). I am running 35psi all around.

might be bad tires.....with high performance tires you can pretty much figure that 1 out of 5 of them is going to have a radial pull that will give you a shudder or a pull to one side. If an alignment doesn't fix it you've probably got a **** tire. I just got tires on my wife's Mazdaspeed and we went through 3 tires before they got one on there that didn't pull.....it's very common.

I bought a set of wheels and tires from a shop and they were ballanced and everything. I had a bad rythmic vibration after 60mph, I took them in and had them ballanced on a hunter machine. They were WAY off.

I had this issue
I have SSR 's 18x9 front and 18x10.5 rear. I found that if I did not seat the hub ring very square when I put the wheel on I got his vibration at speeds of 65 to 75. It is very improtant to get them square. It is a tight fit.
Just my experience.

Mine needed to be rebalanced for the same symptoms you describe.
Go to a shop that has a GOOD balance machine, and make sure they are center balanced, not counter balanced.

balance
Sounds like a definate balance issue. Bought my set from a vendor on this site and supposedly came balanced. My car vibrated at 65mph+. When I went to re balance the guy was laughing the entire time. He let me watch him do it on the hunter machine. He was like, Who ever balanced this tire put 4-5 ounces of weight more than was needed on each tire and also put the weight on the exact opposite side the weight neeeded to go. Rides great now. BEN

Well, I received a set of hub rings and new lug nuts from the guy today. When I took off my rear wheels I noticed that...they already had hub rings installed, and they are square and snug. I inspected the wheels and noticed that there were no weights anywhere. So I guess they never balanced them even though they said they did, or maybe they balanced them at low speed and thought that it was close enough?
I did notice I'm getting a fair amount of tire wear on the inside tread of the rear tires...weird. Must be the camber.
