Question Help... Need 19" Drag Tires for faster 1/4 runs

All right, I have read the sticky here and figured out I know nothing about wheels and what will fit/not fit.

I am looking for the stickiest, fattest tires I can squeeze on my Zr. I am currently running 430 rwhp on Volks (19 x 8.5/10.5 * 24 offset) and Toyo T1 (245/275 x 35 x 19).
I recently installed the AP racing BBK and now have 6 pot /4 pot calipers and 14/13.5" rotors. I know in order to get the current wheels to clear the brakes they had to put spacers on, and man-OH-man, I am JUST barely clearing the rear calipers.

I am building my engine and expect to be pushing 600+ rwhp by summer. So, my question is twofold:
  1. What would be a recommendation for a 19” racing wheel?
  2. Is it possible to get drag radials for 19's & if so, from where and what about slicks…

Thanks guys.

If you are just going to be using them for the 1/4 mile track then I suggest getting some 18s with an offset that will fit around your BBK in the back and BFG makes 315/30/18 Drag Radials. Actually I believe there are some 17" rims that will fit over the rear brakes as well. It's all in the offsets. I believe BFG also makes a 315/35/17 DR as well. If you want full time 19" wheels, look into the new Nismos.

TK2005,

Thanks for the recommendations. I was told that 18's would not fit over the BBK in the rear. Now that I give it some more thought. I have a deep @$$ lip, I guess if I get rid of that, I could get a set of 18's to clear.... Yes, that is a great idea. I will need to try that when the car gets out of the shop.

Thanks again...

Hey, you seriously think a set of 315's would fit without scraping the fender in the back... now that is a heartwarming thought....

Honestly no good drag tires for 19's. People will say use Pirelli this or Nitto that its R-compound but it will costs a ton and wont be 1/2 as good as an 18" drag radial...

I have seen a 315/30/18 tire on the Nismo 18s so I know it fits without scraping. I think it has a +30 offset. Any 18X9.5 rim with a + 30 offset should be able to hold the 315s without rubbing. However, that is a track tested (road track) set up. I might be led to believe that if you were running 315/30/18 DRs with near 15psi tire pressure that you may skinny-up down the track at high speeds and there may be rubbing. The 315s are fine with a stiff sidewall but I am not sure if anyone has tested them for DRs. I am sure that someone ought to be making a 305 DR by now. Plenty of them make 295s. Get the 315s. If it scrapes a little then just modify the fender well. I never understood why people were so scared of modifying the fender well. Just take a heavy rubber mallet or baseball bat to the fender well and make space. It really isn't more complicated than that.

Hey Alberto,
Good to hear from you... I cannot WAIT to get my car back on the track...

You really think I could fit some 18's over those brakes in the rear? Could I keep the 19's in the front, or (if they can fit) put 18's all around for MIR? DAMN, I need to figure out how to lug this around now.

I am sure you can. You just have to play with the offsets. I have seen a Skyline with 15" brakes under some 18s. It can easily be done. You are just going to have to give up your gangster lip to do it. Remember how big the stock brakes were for the 94+ Supras, they came with 17s. The new C6s and Porsches have huge brakes and come under some 18s.

How big are your big brakes? I fit 16" drag wheels over my 12.8" Brembo rotors VERY close but it works...

Back rotors are 13.25" and I have the big 4 pot caliper back there... That is more the problem for the rear wheels, if I did not have the calipers it would be easy...

if your looking for something for 1/4 mile runs... get the smallest diameter wheel you can (17 would be nice I see you have a BBK so 16 is out of the question most likely)... Do like a 17x10 with a really sicky 295

Thanks again,

I will start looking to see if I can find a set of 17 or 18's that will fit. (Alberto your my hero man.... 16's WOW...)

I would love to go for some 315's but that is probably just WAY to wide. I am pretty sure I can fit 295 though.

Will have to start looking around and talking to some shops that specialize in wheel/tire fittment around me.

Search for some weld ProStar XP ... they clear the Brembos and most other brakes just fine. You have countless 16" drag tire options ... from full slicks to some street radials that'll hook 90% as good.

Do a search on this site. There are plenty of pics of the 315/30/18 tire mounted on Nismo rims.

Ya, that is pretty close Alberto. I think after all of this, my best bet is to go with some 17's. I have been assured by a few people who have looked at my car, that with a 30 - 35 offset and normal dish, this will both clear the disks and calipers. If necessary I can put a 10mm spacer on there.

I will roll the fender and put some 315/35/17 DRs on there and see how she holds up.
I have also spoken to AAM and think we will put a 2 step launch controller setup on to help me manage all of that power early on.

Thanks again guys.
