Default 3rd gen RX7 wheels on a 350z?

All,

Its almost racing season again and I need to get a good set of drag radials and/or slicks to push out some good times this year.

The problem is that I can only get a BFG drag radial in 225/45/17 on the stock 17 inch wheels. I dont think thats going to be enough rubber out back to hold the power to the ground.

A friend of mine has a set of 3rd gen RX7 wheels with a set of M/T slicks on them. Do you think they will fit? He has spacers as well if needed. I guess we will find out tonight.... He had them on his MKIV supra TT.

I dont really have the cash to buy a new expensive set of rims just for track use. What are you hardcore track guys using for rims?

Thanks,

Neil

It may work
The stock rx7 wheels are 16x8 +50 offset.
It can work but it will be sunk for days.
Centerbore you do not have to worry about because the Z is a 66mm where as the Rx7 is a 67mm.
Its just a matter of whether or not you want to have that sunken look

unless you have a bbk then you're going to need a different wheel such as the 5zigen fn01r's

I dont have a BBK, nor brembos. He does have some 10mm spacers, which would put it at a +40 offset, still pretty sunken, but this is for the drag strip only, purely function over form.

just run the 10mm spacer and make sure you have enough threads and then go out there and have some fun. Rx7 wheels are pretty light from factory.

I have a couple of them at my garage. They have Nitto's drag radials on them

No need for spacers to fix them on the Z. My friend has fixed them on his track model with no problem.

They are 16x8

Yes they do fit, they are a bit sunk in, but these are form over function, I cant wait to have traction this year!

Mickey Thompson, its a brand of tire, usually racing slicks. This in particular is a M/T ET Street. Basically a street legal racing slick.

Interesting, I used a set of those for running my FD, and my friend Sam still has them.

I may give them a try next weekend.

No problems at all. Didnt even need the spacers. They are sunk into the wheel wells a bit but the slicks are purely for function, I could care less how they look on the car. The M/T is a 26x10.5

I didnt think they would fit, but clearances are great.

form over function
I never understood this phrase. form over function would mean you want the form, or look to be better than the function of whatever it is you are using. In your case you would rather it work and you don't car that it looks sunk in, so wouldn't that be function over form???

10.5" fit!?

I just got some MT DR's, for the FD rims. 255/50/16's, which amounts too 26.1 " diameter, 9" width. I tried the MT ET Drags I had on them, but the squirm was too much, especially once the speeds rose on the big end of the track. The Drags were only 26x8.5, so I guess the DR's should fit fine.

You can also look into mustang v6 wheels, sometimes you can find some 15 or 16 inchers pretty cheap.
