Default Oh no! Dealer has liability issues with providing different aspect ratio! Help!

Hi folks,

I was supposed to be picking up my Track on the 8th, but I got a call today that has me scared. I had originally agreed with the dealer that they would exchange the stock tires for Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires in the sizes I specified at no cost (which matched the stock rolling diameter with 1% deviation). My salesperson called me today and told me that because they are different sizes, they can't put them on for liability issues (VDC, ABS, etc retardation). He told me that the tire people said they can get the Pilot Sport A/S is stock sizes though (!), but according to Michelin's website, they are not made in that size. I understand the salesman may not know what he's talking about, but is there any chance Michelin made a small number of the tires in our sizes, similar to what happened with the Blizzaks? (There were a limited number made in our size, but they were not listed on their website) Furthermore, he has told me that we can change them on our own, but now I'm concerned about "liability." Will they be able to deny warranty service because of tire size? If my tires become scalloped because of the alignment, will they try and blame it on my tires? Can they do this? I'm a little scared.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Which size tires were you proposing to install on your Z?
When I looked, the closest sizes were more like 2.5% off from stock RPM.
Sorry I can't help more; I don't know much about this sort of issue.
Thanks,
Mika

I was planning on putting Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on in the sizes 245/40ZR18 and 255/45ZR18. According the tire calculator they are both around 1% off.

Anyways, I've been talking to other dealers now to see what they can do. Seems like no one can actually put the tires on, but one place is willing to give me $1200 off so I can buy the new tires, plus I keep the stock tires. Furthermore, they told me it won't make any difference regarding the warranty. Hopefully all is solved.

Thanks!

My dealer installed my new tires without hassle about them being a different size.

The dealer may be right. If you compare the 2 sizes you plan to use check the differences between f/r and there seems to be quite a difference which could affect the ABS/VDC. You need to get tires that are almost identical in diameter to the originals.

The ideal match would be 245/45-18 f and 275/40-18 r. The only problem is that you need a minimum 8.5" wheel in back and that's pushing it. A 9" would be much better. Of course this is only relative if you are attempting to use the stock wheels which it sounds like you are.
