I have a base 2006, and the tires slip a lot when I start and shift. Will better and a little bit bigger tires make a big difference in how much I slip/go? I'm thinking about getting some 255/45/18 Michellin PS2 on my rears. My logic is telling me that any Z that upgrades their tires will have significantly better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times since they have better grip. Am I correct?

Basically trying to decide whether I should wear out my stock tires (which i'm not satisfied with) or just upgrade now. Will I notice a big difference?

Yes, better tires will increase performance. I had Bridgestone RE05 tires on and just recently switched to Goodyear Eagle F1's and it was night and day. Good tires are a significant modification to the car. Read this: http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/te...50z/index.html

 

Yes. Tires make a huge difference. I went from the stock RE040's to BF Goodrich KDW-2's and I absolutely love them. Awesome grip, stiff-*** sidewall, relatively low price!

Just to provide an example, in auto-crossing, with a good driver, going from street tires to racing-compounds can shave off anywhere from 2-3 seconds off your times. Thats an eternity in auto-crossing!

 

Think about it bro, the tires are the only force to make that car roll forward. The difference betweeen cheap and great tires is huge. Also the difference in width from lets say a 235 to a 275 makes a HUGE difference. Stock wheels and tires, It was a scary drift machine even with little gas around tight croners. Now 275's in rear it takes alot of effort to spin once there warm.

 

In a word - YES! I just got some PS2s a couple of weeks ago after getting new wheels. Even though I swore I wasn't going to do it, I took the new wheels and tires to an autoX today. It was rainy all weekend and I didn't want to chance the old Potenzas and I was curious to see how the PS2 handled. They gripped and handled better in the rain that my Potenzas did on dry asphalt. Once the course dried up some, they were even more impressive. Granted, they are a lot larger than the Potenzas but I still couldn't believe how hard I could push them without slipping.

I'm throughly convinced that they were worth the extra $$$.

Although it depends on the application, the Michelin PS2s are best in my opinion for everyday driving. If you want autocross tires, then the Kumhos are probably best. I'm sure the drag racing guys have their own "best".

From what I know, they don't make the PS2's in that size. You would have to run a 40 series sidewall.

 

Tires do make a big difference. However, I would say that a huge reason for your lack of traction would be the absence of an LSD or Traction Control on a 300hp car (you said you have a 2006 base).

+1 on no traction control. the vdc helps alot. when i take the vdc off. it slips like a ****

 

your tires are the only part of your car that touches the ground!...better tires are a great investment into performance.

 

Quick noob question...how bad are the stock Pilot Sports in comparison with aftermarkets such as the F1's? (I believe this is what my stockers are...) I feel as though they grip horribly in anything but 100 degree weather and even then it isn't remarkable.

 

The OEM tires are Potenzas - you only dream that they were Pilot Sport 2s. Actually, while a lot of people complain about the Potenzas, I found that they had a pretty good grip. I autoxed mine regularly and they held their own. They do suck in wet conditions or when it's really cold.

 

HATED the Potenzas. LOVE my Toyo T1R's; they changed my driving life. Much stickier, much more stable. Best mod I've done (other than my wheels).

 

My stocks are not protenzas...they are Pilot sports...not PS2's just plain Pilot sports...nobody else has these as their stocks? (its an 05 touring)

 

Did you buy the car new or used? Maybe the previous owner changed out the OEMs for the PS.

 

Good tires wont make up for poor driving techniques. But with good tires, a good driver can push the car more hard.
