Biggest I've ever seen a manufacturer recommend is 255s on an 8.5" wheel. Go to your tire maker's web site, they should have a spec sheet that tells you the range of wheels a given tire is made to fit. Anything outside of that and you're asking for irregular tire wear, reduced contact patch, etc.

+1. Anything bugger is just asking for trouble. I know some have done it, but it's not supported by any manufacturer, and it's just plain dumb. Just MO, and I'm stickin' to it.

Just for arguments sake, tire manufacturers DO suggest wider tires for 8.5" rims. They're not the same series, but it is still suggested.

BFgoodrich KDW-2
285/60R18/RF = 8.0 - 10.0
265/50R20/RF = 7.5 - 9.5
285/55R20/RF = 8.0 - 10.0
305/50R20/RF = 8.5 - 11.0

Perilli P-Zero
275/45 R18TL = 8.5 - 10.5
275/45 ZR19XLTL 108YN0 = 8.5 - 10.5

i'd run 265's on it. thet stock are perfect flush, so 265 would bring them out some more.

We're talking about tires with the proper outer diameter for gosh sakes. All the tires you mention are WAY to LARGE in diameter to fit the car. I'm running 245/70/17 on my truck on 7.5" wheels, and my next set will probably be 265/65/17s. Reason, there is much more sidewall to deflect and mount properly to the rim. On a low profile tire, like we have, that actually will fit the car, you don't have a sidewall (on an oversize wide tire) with enough height to fit the wheel properly.

I know they are different tires. I stated that by mentioning the "series". Meaning "40 series", "50 series", "60 series", "70 series", etc, etc.

So, your argument is the sidewall height? That's not a very good argument. I'll post pics of mine and you can see that there is PLENTY of sidewall to work with. The tire shop had more issues getting off the Potenza RE040 than mounting my Pilot A/S.

You're right of course, I was only looking in the 35 and 40 series tires that will fit our 18"-19" diameter wheels. The smaller and stiffer your sidewall gets, the less leeway you have in wheel size.

My original comment still holds though, check your tire maker's website and run what they tell you to run! Someone spent a lot of skull sweat figuring that crap out for a reason.
