Biggest I've ever seen a manufacturer recommend is 255s on an 8.5" wheel. Go to your tire maker's web site, they should have a spec sheet that tells you the range of wheels a given tire is made to fit. Anything outside of that and you're asking for irregular tire wear, reduced contact patch, etc.

Just for arguments sake, tire manufacturers DO suggest wider tires for 8.5" rims. They're not the same series, but it is still suggested.

I know they are different tires. I stated that by mentioning the "series". Meaning "40 series", "50 series", "60 series", "70 series", etc, etc.
So, your argument is the sidewall height? That's not a very good argument. I'll post pics of mine and you can see that there is PLENTY of sidewall to work with. The tire shop had more issues getting off the Potenza RE040 than mounting my Pilot A/S.

My original comment still holds though, check your tire maker's website and run what they tell you to run! Someone spent a lot of skull sweat figuring that crap out for a reason.
