Question n00b question, need new tires

Hey Guys,

I don't see any sticky for new tires for a general noob. I do drive pretty hard but not track. I have the stock 17' potenza tires and after almost 40k miles i'm desperate for tires. I'm looking for something that will last a long time but won't sacrifice TOO much (a lil is fine) on performace while being damn fu#@ing cheap.

Any recs would be great (i've left chris an email) and what should i expect for price? Under 500?

Thanks everyone!!!

Jason

Default getting slightly used potenza's off CL or Ebay?

What about getting someone's stock tires? I've seen a lot of people upgrade from 17's and need to sell their used tires. I mean i wouldn't buy them if they had more than 1k miles on em and i'd be able to save some money no?

Haha, damn...you got 40k miles on the stock craptenzas? You don't drive as hard as you think...I got about 13k miles on my first set of those and about 6k on my first set of fuzions, 4k on my next set of fuzions, and finally gave in to the cheap $150 Czech Republic tires...haha

Default base tires...good price?

Nice one santacruz. I will probably be driving a bit harder once i get new ones!

So what's a good price for the stock potenza's?

Also, i remember reading on these forums about the feathering...is that b/c of the tires?

Thanks again...much appreciated.

Check tirerack.com for pricing. You will be able to compare the oem wheels against other brands. personally, I find the OEM wheels too expensive for what you get. You can get a much better wheel for alot less.

Man.. 40k!!! You drive about 1/2 as hard as I do... And I consider myself not that crazy of a driver haha.. 40k is ALOT!!! In that time frame I think I'll go through 2 1/2 sets... Oh and I'm pretty sure you don't have feathering...

Check google for tire prices.. some places can be off by more than $30 per tire. Or get some new "used" ones. They'll run you like 70% of the price of the original sometimes.. check the classified forum here or cragslist..

Well you live in a dry state, so if you don't plan on driving when it rains the best street tire that is also the cheapest is the Falken 615's. They are track proven to give you the best lap times for any street tire that is not a R-compound. And they have pretty good life.
If you want great performance and still drive in the rain - expect to pay about twice as much and the KDW 2's or the PS2 are probably the best on the market.
Yet, 40,000 miles sounds a bit to much for any tire for the Z. I only got 10,000 miles out my stock tires.

Just got some Direzzas (245/45/18) for 159 balanced, mounted, etc.. each so for 17s they must be cheaper. Not a bad tire but I cant tell at this point, but I know it cant be any worse than the Potenzas. And with the way youre driving getting 40K miles out of those tires, these will probably last the life of your car!!!

Agree. Price and performance go hand-and-hand. $500 tires are suitable for a Honda Accord not a 350Z. You get what you pay for.

Default Last ?

Alright guys, last question...

So the best i've found is a pair of potenza tires off a brand new Z (roughly 30 miles on em) for 600 out the door. Good deal or no?

I retract my statement about "i drive pretty hard" as i guess i'm not doing crazy drifting and burnouts like you crazy cats.

LOL. Inexpensive tires work in 99 percent of all situations. The other tiny portion of the time is referred to as emergency handling.

$708 for new from Tire Rack... so I guess it's an ok price. Have a look at Discount Tire too... Falken 512 all-seasons go for $380. I have no idea as to performance but I'm loving the Falken RT-615s.
