I live in Columbus, Ohio and every so often we get snow/ice/rain and with winter coming up I want to get a set of all season tires. I want a long tread life along with good traction in rain/snow. Could you guys give me some advice on tires and links/prices?

The Pilot A/S are good. It sticks like glue in the dry grips well in the snow. Even drove one time in 6inches of snow without problems. But once it goes down to the wear limiters it gets slippery. Now I have a 2nd car so the Z doesnt see snow.

Yeah I would love a second car, but being a senior in college I cannot really afford a second car. This should be the last winter this car sees, I plan on moving into a year round warm climate once I graduate in August 2007.

I have also been using these and they work great in the rain and they also get unbelievabley good traction for the hp I am laying down when it is dry out. All around a good tire.

When it is wet out, I've done fairly well on the ASXs -- to the point of having the fast RAW time of the day in my DS SpecV in the wet until the third run of the SM Subarus in the DRY.

There was some definite "taunting" of the SM guys by the announcer after their first two runs...

The turanza Ls-H is a HR rated tire doesnt have a high speed rating. Also the side walls are not stiff. Always go with the ZR,WR,YR rating for the Z. My 96 Infiniti g20 has the LS-H tire.

I also have the Kumho ASX. They havn't touched snow yet, but they are great at everything else so far. They are also very very quiet and have a 420 tread rating. For less than $100 per tire, its a steal.

My wife put Kumho Ecsta DX on her Mercedes two year ago and has been satisfied so far. They are very quiet and a lot better than OEM pirellis.

Glad you asked the question, because I'm here in Alaska and just bought my Z and will be driving it through the winter [that's 6 months for us], so i'm reading all of the advice. I'm also doing alot of research myself and will be glad to share when i'm done. Wasn't even aware of TireRack, and they will drop ship to installer, so that's a plus. I was always a fan of Hakkapeliittas on my maxima, but Tire Rack doesn't seem to carry the Nokians. Any other thoughts out there are appreciated. Thanks ~ jp

Yes, give strong consideration to the Dunlop M3. Great snow tire and not bad on dry roads. Use them exclusively in winter, then change to your summer tires for the other 6 months.

Or, you can do like me and spend $1000 on a set of new 17" wheels and Bridgestone Blizzaks. This way, I can put them on whenever I want (Dont have to make an appointment and spend more money to get the tires mounted). And I keep the stock 18" wheels in good condition without running them through the salt and other "nasty" stuff during the winter months.

I have kuhmo ASX's.. They're good in rain, and better than stock in dry. Also, they're QUIET and much smoother than stock, because of more sidewall flex. You need to keep these inflated at the right amount however. They tend to heat up quickly if under inflated. Also, the life of the tire is exagerated at 440. Its probably 200-250 in real life.

And there is not a chance I'd drive my Z in winter with no-season tires on!!!

Get a set of winter tires for ~6-700$ and save the cost of a new bumper or fender.
