I dont get it. what's so great about a deep lip/deep dish look?

i noticed there's a big trend now to get the 'deepest' lip on a wheel..

imho, it just reduces clearance and hinders possible larger brake upgrades in the future!

i dunno.. can someone explain to me why its so cool now, as say, compared to a few years ago?

 

Years back, before the fwd craze, most wheels had a deep dish to them, imho, it just looks better. In the 80's the cars hubs got pushed farther out to make room for the fwd layout. Aftermarket rims adapted by not having and dish to them. Even cars that were rwd for some reason, were being designed with high offsets, probably because that was what was in. Apparently, new suspension designs are allowing greater dish now, and I for one, am very happy about it. It makes the tire look wider and more agressive from the side view.

 

i already have the brembos so i wouldn't to upgrade the brakes. as for the look, it just looks nice with a lip on a coupe.

 

I don't think the big lip craze ever went out of style, just got hidden slightly in the FWD import freakout that spurred 5 years ago. Now that many people are getting back to RWD cars the bigger lips are now being thrown into the limelight again.

 

I just think it looks really cool with the fat polished lip and the reflections of the spokes in the lip. I think the look has been made very popular by some High end tuner cars...in particular, a whole slew of European Porsche 911 Turbos. Pick up a copy of European Car sometime and you'll see what I mean. I love the look, and my new wheels will have a nice fat lip. I'm usually into hardcore performance mods rather than aesthetics...but for my street wheels I figured I'd sacrifice 2-3lbs per wheel over a lighter one piece wheel without a lip to get the look I want.

 

The deep dish lip looks better to me. The trend seems to be to pull the spoke to be even with the lip (not a deep dish-lip) as are my stock 17" on my Z. I think it makes the tires/wheels look bigger which I like too. For me, I cannot understand why people do not like the deeper dish lip.....

It started with hot rods in the 60's. Remember the Crager mag wheels? How about the Ford Torino with the Big Ol Stripe from Starsky and Hutch? Remember those bad boy deep dish wheels?

Then the 1976 Porsche Turbo Carrera came out. I was hooked. That thing was the meanest beast known to man at the time. Black on black, DEEP dished alloys, and the one I liked had a license plate that read "DVADER".

The 80's came arouind and the abomination known as FWD reared it's ugly head. Offsets were screwed up and the dish wheels just wouldn't fit the front drivers. All of a sudden we started seeing Enkeis with reverse mesh, where the mesh was outside of the edges of the rim. I've always had a particular distaste for that style.

WIth the advent of the 90's, performance cars once again returned to RWD. And now we're back to those deep dish wheels. Anyone want to put some chromed rager's on their Z?

 

I have always thought lips were cool on the rear wheels. I myself like the differentiation. A nice lip on the rear wheels, just lets people know for sure which wheels are putting down the power! Too much lip is bad though! I think more than 3 inches belongs in "Lowrider" magazine

 

I love deep dish wheels. Once I get a second job, I'm going to save up to buy a set of 18" or 19" black HREs with a polished lip.

 

I think the deep dished lip is especially well suited on the Z. It gives the rear of the car a very aggressive stance that is reminiscent of the 96-97 Porsche widebody 911 turbo. I have Axis Se7en Mods in 20x10 ordered for the rear with a full 4" lip. 19x8's for the front and Bridgestone S03 rubber to keep the car planted. I'll post pics when I get them mounted up.

 

I agree with the over 3" rule on lips, however, the Z has huge wheel flares which make even 3.5"-4.0" lips acceptable.

 

True, this would not be bad.
