I've searched and found some answers and still have a few questions. I would also like to ask guys who aren't actually selling me the tires a question or two as well. I'm running a 19x8 rim with 245/40/19 all the way around. I want a fatter tire on the rear. My tire guy wants to sell me 245/40's front and 275/35's rear. -Nitto Neo Gen's

19x8" all 4 rims
Front 245/40 = 26.7" diameter
Rear 275/35 = 26.6" diameter

1. is the 275/35 ok for my rim?
2. will the diameter difference throw off my VDC?

I was looking at the Pilot PS2's, but people have told me that unless I am tracking my car or something extreme, I shouldn't see a difference between the Neo Gen's and the PS2's. Any opinions? This is my first performance tire purchase and I don't want to make a mistake. Thanks everyone..

When +1 sizing it is better to look up the specs from the manufactures website for the application chart. You want to have the new tires as close as possible to the OEM rolling diameter. I will use the 03-05 OEM 18" as the base numbers:

RE40

Fronts:
18 x 8 +30 offset with 225/45/18 Bridgestone RE40 25.9 rolling diameter.

Rears:
18 x 8 +30 offset with 245/45/18 Bridgestone RE40 26.6 rolling diameter.

(Verified on Bridgestone's application chart).

What you are looking for:

PS2:

Fronts:
8-9.5 inch wheel

245/35ZR19 Rolling Diameter 25.8 - Better fitment
245/40ZR19 Rolling Diameter 26.7 - Too tall

Also, the guy who told you not to get the PS2s for performance reasons is full of crap. There's a whole long list of non performance reasons why the PS2s are better. Becareful when buying tires. Sometimes salesmen will push you towards another particular brand or model because they make a higher margin off the sales.

 

The standard sizing is 245/35 front, 275/35 rear. You don't really want the front and rear to have the same diameter, you definitely don't want the front to be taller than the rear, that will definitely throw VDC off.

Don't know if NEO GEN come in 285/35 for the rear but that would work better than the 275 as far as keeping some stagger.

ok, I've got the tires ordered. I am going to go forward with the Neo Gen's because of the price difference for the most part. It's a $400 difference. I have a buddy here at work with a Z. He's rolling on the Neo Gen's and says that he likes them. He did say the PS2's are a better performance tire, but with the way he drives, he can't afford replacing them. Here's what I've ordered.

Front
245/35ZR19 25.79 overall inflated diameter
Rear
275/35ZR19 26.54 overall inflated diameter

This seems to be the closest fit to the OEM sizes. I should have the tires on tomorrow morning. I'm hoping there is not too much tire bluge since I'm going to a 275 on an 8" rim. I'll take some pics to check out and let you guys know what I think in a few days. I really appreciate the assistance here.

275 is way to big for an 8" rim.

As per the nitto website, the ideal rim size is 9.5" and a MINIMUM of 9". Cancel your order, or get new rims if you want to run that size.

I'm sure you can make them fit, but why? They will not perform properly and handle worse.

+1 Crap I missed the 8" all the way around. You and your tire guy are retarded if you run 275s on an 8" wheel. That is very unsafe. Be prepare to be all over the road when you switch lanes. I don't understand why people think they can crame oversized tires on stock wheels or bought the wrong application. What's the offset for those wheels? Are they even for a Z? Seriously man, you need to take everybody's advice here or you'll learn the hard way.

 

Unfortunately, the rims came on the car. :-( I haven't really paid much attention to them since I had no problems so far. Now I'm looking at new tires and problems have come.

okay I'll take that back and apologize for the retard comment. What it was really ment for was your tire saleman. Do you realize that if you had put 275s on the rears and got into an accident they would be liable? The specs you've mentioned in your original post is considered dangerous. If you search deep enough you'll actually find a few individuals posting that they lost stability and control with oversized tires. It's pretty simple if you think about it. With an overhanging tire, the sidewalls have no support to handle the load of the car properly. In extreme cases the bead of the tire would actually roll off the wheel. Please do yourself a favor and spend a little bit of money if you want to go wider.

 

This is causing a real headache. I think I'll hold off and comb the classifieds for a wheel/tire combo. What I'd really like to find is a set of 18x8.5-9 front and 18x9.5-10 rear rims. I should be FI within 4 months (considering tax time!!!) and am just trying to get as much tread on the ground as possible. -To a certain extent. Thats why I was open to the idea of the 275's, not knowing the possible consequences. Hmmm... I am correct in going down to 18's for performance reasons, right?

I would also suggest you read the FI forum more if you think "tax time" money is enough for FI. You need expendable cash for that game.

Reyes, I think Dave was suggesting the standard "upsize" would be 245/275, not standard "stock" size. I would suggest 255/275 myself as closer to stock size and reduces understeer.

Alright guys. I got new rims along with new tires so my fitment would be correct.

I went with Axis Shine's.
Front 19x8.5 26lbs
Rear 19x9.5 27lbs with 3.5" lip. I like the lip

Toyo TR1 tires
Front 245/35/19
Rear 275/35/19

I definately have more grip and I haven't even worn the shiney tire crap off yet...

Have you ever let anyone drive your Z? Just seems they don't really know how. I won't show that unfortunate video with stalling and crap, but he did ok rolling it down the street. Vid is 50mb done with my digi camera so I can't really compress the file. It should be up later tonite when this dang Verizon wireless card hurrys its butt up.. Need cable modem...
