Question Anyone have experience with the Kumho Ecsta MXs?

Around $170 savings over same size S-03s. 245/40/18 and 275/40/18. Good tires, bad tires?

A lot of E36 M3's are using the MX's as SCCA autocross tires due to their excellent dry grip and value without having to buy pure competition tires such as the Kumho Victoracers or Hoosiers which only last a few sessions and are expensive. They can keep the MX's as street tires and show up at the events ready to go. Just by coincidence i was at the shop last night when i noticed these tires on an E36 M3 and the guy I know is active on autocross events and from what he says, these tires are quickly gaining popularity with fellow autocrossers.

My own experience with the Ecsta Supra 712 has not disappointed me either on my other car. And I will be running the MX's with my 17" wheels for autocross.

At the same time, I would also expect the MX tires to wear faster than the S-03's and i don't believe the wet grip would be as good.

All I know is that if they release a 19" tire in the sizes I have--I'll be all over them!! They rated the Kuhmo's 'Best bang for your buck"

All the ITR and some WRX guys use em---By the time My TOYO T1s' are done I hope they have my Tires out--I was also thinkin of VENTIUS tires as well??

No more TOYO's for me--they are GREAT Tires...but damn I payed $1200 for them--I'm not use to that @ all--->But If I launch @ 2k RPMs--man,...the Z just scats--barley any wheel spin and no bog what so ever---just gone!!! I can't wait to race someone from a launch! That should have been for my friend's(plural) EVO VIII's but we never got to race!! I would have been right there w/ him!

I love my MX's, I have the 17's and am currently running 245/45/17f and 255/45/17r on aftermarket wheels. I have 5,000 HARD miles on them and they are showing no real sign of excess wear. I would guess you might get up to 20,000 miles on them or more if your easy on them. When I say hard miles, I only got 7,000 miles out of a set of AVS intermediates on the rear of my LOTUS Turbo Esprit, Right foot hammer down!!
I have not had a chance to get in temps above the 50's yet because I bought the MX's in November, but I can get them hot enough to pickup rocks after about 3 corners when its cold outside.

Grassroots Motorsports Magazine did a revue on the tire comparing it to the BFG KD's and the Pilot Sports.

Dry #1 BFG, MX's finished #2 and the Pilot Sports were #3.
Wet #1 Pilot Sports, MX'sfinished #2 and the BFG's Were #3.

My experience was that they will only pay for stock tires, when mine had the feathering I was in the process of getting the Rays and I tried to get them to buy 2 18" tires for me instead of 17's since what would be the difference to them but they said that would be a modification and not covered, so those guys that have installed other tires or wheels and get feathering be ready for a fight or no warranty on that issue, so when I saw Brad get the feathering the second time around I reinstalled my 17's with the 2 new RE040's and will only put the Rays on for special occasions. It was fun though taking the RE040's to Sebring and not caring about tires.

The Ecsta MX is a great tire. Extremely good dry grip, and you can get decent life out of them....220 treadwear rating. I know lots of people who run the tire on a daily basis, and autox/road race with them on the weekends. Can't really beat it for the money.

Thanks for the responses, people! At the rate I'm going through tires, I was looking for something comparable to the S-03 for a little less. The MXs have an almost identical treadblock pattern to the S-03 and the same 220 rating. If they perform as well, the savings are worth it IMO.

Tread wear ratings cannot be compared across different tire brands. Only within the same brand. So a 220 Toyo does not equal a 220 Yokohama.

I might get these tires too, let me know how they look on the stock wheels. They might be a little wide, and I hate the look of tires that are too wide, where the sidewalls are bulding out over the wheels. Pics would be nice.

Thanks,

Mark
