Tire patch w/o removing the tire
The rear tire on my car had a nail. So I stopped by Midas today for a tire patch since it's right by my work place. Unlike other tire patches I've done, they actually patched it from the outside of the tire. The tech guy pulled out the nail. Then he pushed a rubber string with glue (half the width of a pinky) through the hole. About 2 inches went inside the tire and he cut off the extra from the outside
I was like WTF. I actually tested with the soap and it stopped leaking. They said they warranty for 3 months. Anyone had this done ?

lol.. that’s like everyday tire patching here in New Orleans the way I grew up.. to actually take a tire off and patch it from the inside is.. well.. not heard off. I've had it done on other cars of mine in the past and they have held up just fine.. now, with the Z... I think I would go the "normal" route..

Plugs are not the preferred method of repair, the patch is. Sometimes you have to do a little emergency field repair and the plug will come in handy. I'm thinking of buying a plug kit myself after what I saw yesterday. We were at a out-of-the-way autocross location (Belle Chasse NAS) when a guy in a S2K had a tire going flat. No spare, small electric pump couldn't fill it fast enough. He was looking to borrow a wheel/tire that would fit so he could drive back to civilization to find someone to fix it. Turns out somebody had a plug and fixed him up in minutes. It's the next best thing to the forbidden alternative - leak stop goo. NEVER use that crap!

I just had my right rear patched by Les Shwab or however they spell it. Guy told me 37 bucks. I was like wtf for a plug? I never paid more than 10 bucks for a 3 minute plug job. He said the right way to do it is from the inside with a patch.
I had plugged one of my fronts on the Z before and had it up to 150 mph briefly before and it didn't blow up or anything and never lost air. I totally don't recomend driving 150 mph let alone on a plug but it worked fine in my case.
However the best way aside from buying a new $300 tire or two, is to patch them from the inside. If I would have known they were gonna have to remove the tire from my wheel, I would have just plugged it myself, to avoid the chance of them trashing my wheels. I always carry plugs and a mini compressor in my car and truck, as well as fix a flat in a worse case scenario.
