Sport Compact Car Magazine’s Project Z Tire Setup
I just recently got the June issue and was reading the article on their tire setup on their 350z. They are running 275/35/18 all around w/ BBS FR18x9 and Rr18x9.5 and TCS turned off and have had great results.
Now I’m a bit confused.
As I have read if the car is equipped with a VDC, there has to be a slight difference in tire height, bias to the rear, or it will get screwed up. Won't the same thing happen with regardless if the TCS is turned off?
Any insights?

1) It's not a standard everyday setup. They are going for handling as in an autocross or track car. Therefore then turn off TCS and would do the same to VDC if the car had that.
2) Most Zs with VDC will work fine with no stagger. Some are more sensitive than others and may throw the slip light during turns, etc. The thing that definitely freaks VDC out is when the fronts are taller than the rears. That's a definitely no-no.
My autocross setup is 265/35 all around. I drive to and from events on them as well as occasionally driving them for daily use. I have never had VDC kick in, even during spirited driving. I don't autocross with VDC on though as those violent moves will definitely cause it to activate.

Actually in the June article does not say they were 275/35s, it just says 275s, in the previous article that Dave posted a link to, they were using 275/40R18s all around.
One option if you what to keep the diameter difference but at the same time stay the same width, you could go with a 275/35 up front and a 275/40 out back.

My mistake, I double checked and it is 275/40/18 all around.
Chris- Arent you running the same series all around with you Kumhos? I remember reading one of your post on that setup.
Are you coming down again for the Z car show?

I'll be at the show sporting some Goodyear GS-D3s, see how the car goes on the autocross compared to the same size SPTs I was running last year.
Look me up maybe we can get in the dame run group again.

VDC is fine, probably kicks in a little earlier than usual but not intrusive at all. I usually turn it off for hard squirts

One of the things that I have observed over the years is that some cars behave differently than others regarding VDC. Some people have reported VDC issues with the same size all around. Some have reported issues even with a small stagger. This was especially true of the 03 and 04 models but I haven't noticed it as much recently. Possibly Nissan relaxed the tolerance on VDC and tire sizes or maybe people have just gotten smarter and stayed away from the close sizes.
The bottom line is that if you want to avoid TCS/VDC problems, stay away from F-R staggers of less than 0.25". Yes, you might get away with it but odds are you won't.

What would you recommend for the rear. Right now I have 275 35 19 and 245 35 19's, but I want to upgrade. I would like to go 295 in the rear and 255 in the front, but I dont want to encounter any of the vdc problems. Thanx
