Default Help with noise in right rear wheel (not brakes)

So I thought it was my brakes going bad because it's a high pitched sound when I'm on the brakes at about 20 mph or less. Took it to Midas and they called and said it wasn't the brakes at all. They thought it was the hub/wheel bearing.

Could this be the problem? Anyone else have problems like this? 44k+ miles on the 04 Z. Just put new 19" wheels on her about 2 weeks ago. Hope this isn't the culprit. Please help if you can. Appreciate it!

P.S. How much damage am I doing to the car by driving on this thing????

Is it also possible that something might have gotten into the brake pad to make this a temporary sound? Maybe the brake shop was just taking a stab at the potential problem if it wasn't the brakes?

44,000 miles. Yes wheel bearings may be the problem. Heavy 19 inch wheels with an aggressive offset puts additional stress on the suspension and bearings.

Are you saying this is going to keep happening with my current setup or it's just going to start happening at an acclerated rate? How long should I expect out of any bearing I replace?

Thanks davidv for your post. Have any idea where the DIY for this job?

P.S.- I noticed driving the car today there might be a very light grinding/rough noise coming from the same wheel.

Does it make the noise driving down the road? Normally a wheel bearing will make noise rolling down the road. It rarely has anything to do with braking.

I can barely hear a slight rough/grind sound when I'm rolling. It's a faint sound at the moment. I just noticed it during lunch but I was trying to listen for it.

Yes.

One way to check wheel bearing play is to raise the wheels off the ground and rock the tires in an out while watching for any looseness.

Spinning the tires by hand is another way to check for bearing problems. Some brake drag is normal, but any noise from the bearings or roughness calls for further inspection.

If it is the wheel bearing, Don't take it on the Highway for long trips. The heat will cause the bearing to weld causing your wheel to actually lock up!! Luckily for you (and myself) the wheel bearing is connected to the powertrain, which means it it covered under your warranty totally free. Now go to your nearest dealership.

davidv, thanks again for your insight.

The brake shop pretty much told me there was some play in the wheel so this is what they suspected. Am I doing some real damage to my car by driving on it like this? The stealership quoted me $380 to get it fixed (1 freakin wheel!!) and I can't do that until the end of the month. I've read doing it myself shouldn't be an option because packing the bearings needs to be done by a mechanic.

You don't think I haven't already done that????? Dude, everyone asks questions before they have to post for help here!!! I was already told that it WAS NOT covered by the Nissan Dealership where I live.

So after your post saying it was, I called Nissan directly to ask them about the powertrain warranty and they ALSO said it IS NOT COVERED under powertrain!

Exclamation

You don't need some kid sitting at home posting notes on forums while he watches fast and the furious to back it up... Just take it to your dealership get it fixed for free. Its on the Powertrain, believe me I'm getting mine done this week (03 35K Miles) How do I know...??? Well because I had it at Nissan last week for one of those faulty Trannys and got a new clutch disc for free, thats right new tranny and clutch for free!!!! Always check your warranty before you blow $380 at meineke, now go to Nissan and be done with it.

I applogize. I called my nissan dealership again and spoke to a different service rep. I quoted to him the powertrain warranty book and he looked it up. He said it is covered under powertrain. Problem solved for now. Again, I appologize.
