Default Wheel Damage!! Urgent Question!!

When I had my new tires installed, the tire guys scratched my stock rim on the front drivers side. I told them about it and they said they would fix it. Their wheel repair process involves taking off the wheel, shipping it off for 2 days, and having a third party fix it.

The repair people heat the wheel, strip it down, and repaint it (I have the factory painted rims).

My question: Should I let them do this? Is it a good idea for someone to paint only one wheel and not all of them (especially when they only ship one wheel to the repair people). Do you think they will be able to match my other wheels? Should I get some kind of guarantee that they will do it over if it doesn't match?

...Bottom line, should I even bother fixing this or am I asking for more trouble???

I'll post pics of the damage later today. It's not bad, but the paint is flaking all around the edge of the wheel and now it's getting dicolored in the scrape where brake dust is collecting. they made some minor scratches on the other wheels too, but not worth messing with IMO.

the reason i put urgent in the subject line is because the tire guys are calling anytime to set up the appointment, and if i get some input from you guys, i might decide to bail before they call.

That’s in case repair fails..... but typically they do a good job.

btw, those are not my rims... just a link to craigslist.

thanks man. i appreciate the heads up. so they usually do a good job? is it worth the risk?? is paint matching a problem?? if so, i'd rather have a small scratch, than a mis-matching wheel.

I’d say keep the scratch, and get a few bucks off the deal.

also who did it?

tires plus on piedmont road.

you'd say take a few bucks from the deal? hmmm. i think i like that idea. another thing that sucks about the deal is that i'd be without a car for like 2 days but prolly more---

how should i go about asking for cash? you think i should go in and say, "i am nervous to let someone try to match paint and all, could i just forgoe the repair and get some money off of my tire purchase instead?" Or, would you approach it a different way?

...actually, i'm not super impressed with tires plus, overall.

not only did they scratch my rims, they also charged me a crap-load on some new plugs to repair a pre-ignition knock and the new plugs did absolutely nothing to help and cost me a lot of money.

they also charged me for an induction cleaning which also didn't help anything. i don't know what to think of these guys. they told me the only other solution was to put octane boost in my gas tank, which also did nothing and i found out that it's not good to put that crap in your tank anyway. i'm just going to live with the slight knock. it's very hard to notice and a little knock never hurt anything, right? i'm tired of taking it to mechanics.

id say let them fix it and see what happens....if they f*ck it up more then make them buy u a new wheel. thats what i would do. if they are sending it to a wheel repair place they SHOULD know what they are doing.

I wouldn't let them ship off the wheel. I would find out how much a new wheel is and ask them to deduct the price form the bill. Go to the Nissan dealer and get a quote for the wheel in writing.

It's hard to judge without pics, I'm assuming the wheel was in pristine condition.

Or ask them what it costs to refinish the wheel and shipping costs and get that deducted from the bill and take care of it yourself.

thanks. i like that advice. i'm very reluctant to let them take the wheel and do all the crap themselves. i have this funny feeling that the wheel will come back worse than when it left.

honestly, i think it will be very hard to get someone to just buy a new wheel...they will always want to try to repair rather than shellin out the money for a new one...of course the best thing to do is just make them buy a new one but i dont think it will happen. thats y i said let them do their repair thing. either way u go good luck.

needless to say, depending on how much trouble i have to go through to get this situation corrected, i will prolly never go back to these clowns. that's the trouble with moving to an area where you don't know anyone. i think i need to go to mechanic school, buy some equipment and fix my own sheit!

I feel your pain bud.. g/l with whatever you decide.. similarly, don't ever go to Global Tire in Hackensack, for any NJ ppl. nothing but a bunch of incompetent morons; I can't believe Tirerack RECOMMENDED them! No F*in way.. i don't want to get into it, but they wasted two days of my time, i had to leave work one day as soon as getting in, only to pick up my car which was left with a half/mounted new rim to a new tire in the hatch and had to drive home on a donut!

+1 on the DIY and GET IT DONE RIGHT!

that's what i hate. they keep having me come back in to the store to get extra sheit done that they should have done in the first place. it's a F^^king pain. i just wish they would keep it til they could fix it. they are just way too busy and are careless and wont take the time to do a good job. same old story....which is why i hate mechanics.
