Default Can I Replace My Rear 235-50-17 With 255-40-17

I had the front tires on my 04 convertible replaced a few months back by my Nissan dealer for feathering. I just noticed my rear tires are down to 4/32's. I am replacing the tires on my wifes Boxster, she says they are too noisey--she's right they are. Her tires have decent tread 9/32's. Is there any downside to replacing my 235-50 with her 255-40's. I drive pretty aggressively or should I say spirited driving style. My real aggressive driving is saved for the track in my track car. I drive the car year round but very rarely in rain and never in snow.

The front tires are taller than the rear.

davidv,
Thanks for the tire calculator, but I don't understand what this translates to in terms of safety, performance ad handling.

dkmesa350z,
Why do you say don't do it. I understand that the handling may be negatively affected, but in street driving will it be affected to the point I'll notice it? If the ride/handling or noise quality is so noticeable that I can't take it, I'll just replace the tires with the correct ones. All I've lost is the cost of mounting/balancing 2 tires. I hate to have these 4 tires from my wifes car just lying around my garage. I figure it's worth a shot so long as it is not a safety issue or may cause some kind of damage to the vehicle.

Other than negatively affecting handling characteristics and looking goofy as hell it can throw off vdc causing your slip light to jump on and throttle to disengage under heavy acceleration or accelerating over bumps or around turns. If you have a base model, you probably don't have to worry about this, but if it is an enthusiast or an AT touring be forewarned
