slap your co worker in the face tomorrow. The me length of a wheel does not matter...the width will though

I know how people love to bash on 20's soon as they see it in a thread title but does anybody have any actual proof either way as to why 20's are or are not better for cornering on the track?

Or are we all just relpying for the sake of bashing the 20's?

So are you guys saying 18's are better than 20's for track cornering? So does that mean a 16" wheel with a talller sidewall than an 18" would be better than an 18" for cornering?

I don't think so.

I'm not saying 20's would be better, however there is less sidewall flex than 18's.

Something to think about

Now flame on.

^^you're talking about tire sizes though not wheel size.

if you want less sidewall you could just get a lower aspect ratio tire

a 225/35/20 would have the same sidewall height as a 225/35/18...no?

someone correct me if im wrong.

you're also increasing rotational mass as the weight of the wheel gets further from it's center. Im not a physicist though

Having SOME side wall is good. The whole thing about 20's for performance is that usually 20s are heavier than 18s including the tires.

More rotational mass w/ a 20", most are heavier, no one offers a high performance tire for a 20", and they are hideous.

that extra 2" that can't fit..........god my humor has changed so much since i've joined this forums.

The only 20" i like is the TE37's but they seem to have lost that concave look. If anyone has the new HyperRev magazine it's on the first page.

I'm talking about cornering not the Hp loss with 20's. We all know 20's kill zero to whatever times.

I want proof that 20's corner/stick worse than 18's, when it comes to which can pull more G's in a turn, with both 18 and 20" setups running the same width rubber and correct profiles for their given wheel dia.

Example

245/40/18 and 275/40/18
vs
245/30/20 and 275/30/20

whats harder, trying to spin a smaller wheel, or a larger wheel. the larger wheel covers more area per rotation that the small one does.

but.. they make 30 series sidewalls for 18" wheels too.

He's talking about small sidewalls not having flex.

I'm no biologist, but why not just split the difference? Run 18's up front and 20's out back.

this discussion is dumb

18's will have a much larger selection of track tires available for one. The tire is actually a part of the suspension and you NEED to have some sidewall flex for the tire to keep in smooth contact with the road at all times. Too little flex and little bumps will probably upset the set of the car too easily on anything but the smoothest track. Not to mention that 18's will be lighter. Also, the wheel doesn't move straight up and down through the travel, the tire needs sidewall to flex a little to allow the tire to stay in good contact with the pavement.
