Default Cutting/Grinding fenders?!?

Question guys, would it be possible to cut/grind the bulk of the inner fender and then heat the fender and finish the rest off with a set of flat metal pliers? I think if I took my time it could turn out just as good as having it done by someone else. Im pretty meticulous when I do things so I have good enough confidence I could pull it off.

I think this is similar to what the shop was going to do when I took it in for a quote. He sorta described the same as above.

What do you think?!???

Thanks,

-Alex

I cut mine out on the RX7. Rolled the sharp edge up a tad and hit it with undercoat. Worked just fine. Need to do the Z, but haven't got around to it.

How did it turn out? After looking closely at the rear fenders, I really cant see how this will be very difficult? Do you have any pics of what you did on the 7?

I do I'm sure, but I'd have to look. I can't imagine it would be hard at all on a Z. I've done it on 3-4 of my cars.

But, it's just as easy to just roll them. I think the general opinion is that rolling is better.

I'll see if I can dig up pictures, but I don't want to promise anything because everything's on disks and I have like a million of them!

i would just have a pro roll them, if he messes it up its his problem. If you mess it up, which sounds very possible from the method you explained, you are screwed.

Is cutting the fender better or rolling it?

the fronts are already rolled at the top from the factory...

i cut mine with a jigsaw while laying on my back, it was a PITA! then went back and spent a few hours filing the metal smooth and sealing it with a few coats of under carriage paint or bedliner.

if you can get them rollled FLAT by a "pro" its worth it IMO. if you cut it, you will sacrifice the structural integrity of the top portion of the fender where it has been spot welded.
