Default Tire size 255 rear

Just wondering if sticking with the 225/45/18 Front and switching to a 255/40/18 in the rear instead of the 245/45/18 would work ok with traction control, VDC, touring 18" wheels, etc?

The rear tire is 1.50 mm taller than the front. I do not recommend this set-up with VDC.

I honestly wouldnt worry about it. You can always turn off the tc if you have too many issues. Im running 255s up front and 305s in the rear and its fine. Sure there are some issues with the TC but its totally livable. I only notice it once a couple of weeks if that.

The oem rears 245/45/18 are Overall Diameter:26.68 in even taller then the 255/40's....so thats even taller again...not sure if I am following your theory

I ran the numbers once, and I think 255/45/18 is within tolerance. Could be wrong though.

a 255/45 is about +1% from 245/45 would be fine to use, speedo will be slightly off but not much at all, less than 1mph.
