^^ Your tire sizes on 20" wheels are within OEM stock specs, so you should expect good resuts... even with a VDC equipped car.

So, what if I put the 245/45/18 from the rear onto the front
and get a pair of 285/40/18 for the rear?

The ratios appear ok & I need all the grip I can get in the back

Just do 295/35 rears and 275/35 fronts.
