Why not?..... A better option would be to get lighter wheels I guess.

this is true but i thought 17 would be too small not wide enough for the rear but i guess if i get a good enough tire.

Wider is better...BUT for the price difference in race tires for 17 vs 19's will likely allow you to buy better rubber.....

only thing I can think of is give it a shot, if it doesn't work for you you'll likely wear out the 1st set of tires in a season, and you can try something wider.

You'll be fine with the stock 17s. I actually bought two sets and used the four rear 17x8 rims. I mounted 275/40/17 tires on them and used this setup for autocross & road course. Inexpensive way to get started since stock 17 rims are common and cheap. No issues at all -- I used 20mm spacers in front & 25mm in rear to flush them out.

Here's a picture of my Z with the stock 17s (rims were powdercoated black) & 275/40/17 Hankook Z211 race tires:

That looks good z-u-later. What color did you paint those rims? Is that gloss black?

Yes, they were powdercoated glossy black. I usually get double-takes from other drivers asking if they're aftermarket rims.
