Default TPMS Batteries or not there

Just bought my Z and did a bit of searching couldn't find an answer. I bought mine used with aftermarket rims and I have no TPMS readings was wondering a couple of things. Do the batteries in them eventually go dead? It is an 03. Is there anyway to tell if they are installed on the car without dismounting the tire?

Thanks,
Rich

Aftermarket rims - pretty good chance that the previous owner didn't put them in.

Yes, the life expectancy is about 7 years.

If they are mounted the same way they come from the factory, you'll have aluminum stems. That's not 100% if they were mounted internally with the banding method.

I assume if you drive around then look at the multi-display all you get is "--" on the PSI screens and if you drive continuously for about 45 minutes, the warning light comes on the dash, correct? If that's the case then you don't have the sensors installed.

If the battery went dead, I doubt all four would go at the same time so you ought to be able to read at least one PSI measurement in the display.

Can if I get a set do the new sensors have to be programmed by the dealership or can a tire shop do it for me?

Dealer. No tire shop is going to have ConsultII system that is required.
