Got a knick on your polished lip? Read here!
Ok, I am a perfectionist and can't stand knicks or scratches of any kind. I also have started showing my car in shows and the knicks and light scratches have really bothered me as of late. So after consulting with a professional motorcycle polisher I decided to get the knicks out of my wheels. Here is what you do:
1. Go to your local automotive shop like Advance Auto Parts, Pep Boys etc. Go to the paint/touch up section and buy 800, 1200 and 1500 grit wet sand paper. 800 is the harshest and the one you use for the deepest knick and 1500 is the lightest and the last one you use.
2. You can remove your wheel to make it easier but not necessary. Grab a water hose and remove the nozzle and turn on the faucet to a very slow pour.
3. If the knick doesn't appear to be too deep then start off with 1200. Wet the wheel first and hold the hose above the knick. Begin to sand the knick back and forth making sure that the sand paper stays constantly wet. It will require a little effort but will totally depend on how deep. If the 1200 isn't cutting the knick deep enough then use the 800. When the knick is gone hit it with the 1200 a few times then finish with the 1500 for a few seconds.
4. Take some wheel polish (mothers wheel cleaner, blue magic or whatever else you use to polish your wheels) and rub it on the part that you sanded. Polish it with a clean rag and tada!
I know this sounds scary to attempt and trust me, I was scared. You cannot possibly imagine how easy this is. I had lots of little scratches along the lip of the wheels where they had been done at the place that mounted my tires. If you have this as well do this:
1. Run the 1500 along the edge of the lip while pouring the water on the sand paper as described above.
2. Run your wheel polish on it and you will be amazed when you clean it off.
Hopefully your wheels will look as pefect as mine. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

No, my wheels are totally high polished with no clear. However my new wheels that are on order will have brushed aluminum spokes that will be clear coated but my lip will be polished and not cleared. It's a 3 piece wheel. Any chips on the clear? Did the tire mounter rub the edges at all?
I have one chip on a spoke, just worried about it peeling. No problems at all with the lips though. I've thought about cleaning the surface and just touching it up with some type of clear coat. Maybe after that some wetsanding.

you can and I will find out what that stuff is. I changed my order today to a 3 piece wheel. That way I get brushed aluminum spokes and a polished lip with no clear coat on the lip. More money but worth it to me.
