most all cast wheels will just about melt when they go into the oven to cure the powder coat..... so probably not a really good idea to powder coat cast wheels

other than that... I'd go with powder coat over paint any day, it's much more durable than paint.

does it get that hot?

anyway, your talking about the forged track rims, which I dont think is a problem then. and powder coat with clear coat on top is the best you can have.

it shouldn't be that hot. eastwood company sells a home powdercoating kit, and one of the options for large items is a heat lamp for curing them.

Many wheels are powder coated. In fact, I believe most factory wheels come powder coated. I think the temperature for curing is around 400 degrees. That won't melt any metal.

My wheels are powdercoated. no problems or notiable disadvantages. the finish is smooth and it is durable. no chipping or fading or anything like that.

yeah Ive never heard of wheels melting during powdercoating. cast wheels are poured as liquid metal, so it would take more than 400 degrees to melt them.

your right on the curing temp I have a powdercoating company and cure at 400 degrees. One variable is weight of metal eg: aluminum railing takes 10-12 minutes in the oven. A heavy *** motor block, well i have not done one, but probably around 30-40 min. Ive done about 4 sets of wheels and they all came out really nice. The key to a good finish is a properly prepped wheel. Walnut shelling is a very good stipping method.

Default Reasonable Rims Dilema?

Hey Guys,
I hope all is well. Any advice on after market rims. Something good looking, but not excessively under or over priced. I've even thought about taking my OEM's and having them chromed this winter. I welcome your ideas and pics if you have some.

Disadvantage - if the coating chips, no touch ups

Still, working in a panel shop and having to prepare/paint rims all the time, I'd say powdercoat all the time

I had my white wheels painted first, then powdercoating after all the scratches I preferred the powdercoating, more durable.

As soon as my bike arrives, I'm stripping it and having the frame/rims powdercoated...
