Default Large rear tire(s)..

Last year my 04 350Z was hit by a drunk driver (was posted int he forums last august... yes it sucked)... they replaced the rear drivers side tire becuase it was effed, which of course meant the passenger side tire would obviously wear out before it. I'm leaving for the beach and noticed yeah the passenger side was pretty much balled... so.. i wanted to pick up a set of used tires cheap, figure in the fall get new ones... the local shop put on..

BF Goodrich G-Force 285/40/17 on both rears, both tires have 70% of the tread left, and they were only 42 bucks each including mounting and balancing....

Clearly thats a huge tire for a 17" rim, but they said it was completely fine... now I have some people saying thats not safe, others saying it might wear funny but thats about it. It doesn't rub, they look fine, there's no odd look to the sidewalls..... just looking for some input..

*** Edit** 2004 350Z, Autostick, stock 17" rims..

No odd look to the side walls? They've got to look like balloons on there. 285s are make for 10" wide rims, not the 7/7½" that came on 17" OEM setups.

I don't know who they were who said it was completely fine, but 285s are not recommended sizes for those wheels.

Honestly, That's why I'm asking, The shop who sold me them and mounted/balanced them said they were fine and woudn't rub and I woudn't have any issues with them, but if thats wrong I'll gladly go back tell them thats totally wrong and get a different size....

Thats a great tire if you had a 9.5 inch wide wheel.

My biggest question is.. is it safe?... I'm not to concerend with uneven tire wear, as they only have to last me a few months....

I want to say no, but I'm not a tire expert. I wouldn't see a problem with it if the car sees minimal miles.
