Default Powder Coat Wheels...help

Please help...

I am having my stock wheels powder coated and I want to be sure that they have the highest shine possible. Can I add an extra coat of clear to the rims once I get them back from the powder coater? The powder coat guy assured me they would look like glass when I get them back, but I want an extra coat of clear paint for that extra shine.

Thoughts from anyone?

if they're gonna look like glass don't worry about the clear... just get some windex and you'll be set

If you've ever seen powder coated parts, you'd know that they don't need clear coat. It's incredibly glossy without it.

Good luck keeping scratches off of them. I had my wheels done in gloss black and every time I wipe them down I get new scratches. Thats using microfiber cloths and soap and water. As soon as you get them back try to load them up with a lot of coats of wax, that might help. I was told by the powdercoater that clear is very soft.

I have my 35th aniv wheels powder coated in gloss black and gave a rim stripe of silver..it looks good so far ...5 months ands no scratches or crack..(knock wood)

Powder coating is done on objects to resist wear , scratches and harsh chemicals/brake dust etc unlike paint...so it will outlast paint a lot longer if the powder coat is done good.

I've had 3 sets of wheels that where powder coated along with a set of Candy purple brakes... And you guys are telling me painted wheels don't crack or chip? I've never had a problem with any of my PC's ever crack.

We are talking about OEM wheels, that break once they have been powder coated. Not cracks or chips in the powder coating. 06 and newer wheels are the worst for this. Are we on the same page now?

Cracking possibly due to the baking of a powdercoated part doing some sort of heat treating to the rim?

OIC... I just inserted foot in mouth. I cant see why though... most powder coating curing isn't done at that high of a temp right, 300 degrees?

300-400F. . .typically for curing. If an old PC must be removed, the temp is even higher.

I have only heard that the stock Z wheels sometimes crack. I have never heard about aftermarket wheels (cheap or not) cracking because of powdercoat. It must have something to do with the heat and what the Z wheels are made of or how they were made.

To the guys talking about the wheels cracking...

I've also seen untouched OEM wheels crack, as I have seen the face on a set of CCWs crack.

Wheels take impacts it has nothing to do with powdercoating. Powdercoating is done at a temperature of about 400 degrees. Forged and casting is done around 800-1000 degrees.

Just because you saw something don't assume. **** happens.
