Exclamation Punctured tire

2 days ago my TPMS came up. I took it to my garage, and they found a 3" long, 0.25" diamater nail in my rear tire.

Tire is OEM Bridgestone 265/35/19.

The garage put a plug on it, and the light went away, until this morning, it came back on again.

I then took it to a tire shop, and they said plugging is not a good idea (indeed), and they suggest they could "patch it from inside out" for $35.

Then they called me 30 min later, said "the whole is too big to patch, the plug made the hole even bigger. You need a new tire."

Does this sound legit???

Tomorrow morning I am going to visit another tire shop and see if they say the same thing.

The funny thing is, while the light on the dash is on, according to my gauge, the tire reads 35 psi, and the tire doesn't look visibly flat.

Any ideas?

The tire technician has inspected the tire. I have not. Who's advise is most valuable?

One new tire is fine. If VDC or TCS acts up then you need 2 new tires on the same axle.

I've never seen a 3" nail that was 1/4" in diameter. Most nails that size are much smaller in diameter. However, if you really did get something 1/4" diameter go through a tire, then I can believe the tire needs replacement. A hole that large would have sliced through such a large swath of the steel belt(s) that it would weaken the entire tire, so it's not only a matter patching the hole.

I've seen them...things like gutter nails are that thick.

Back on topic -> go with whatever Davidv said; he has a little experience with Z's.

So I took the car to a tire shop, and they've found a large hole in the rear and small one on the front.

Patched both, properly.

But the TPMS light still stays on.

The shop told me to bring the car back in on Monday AM, and they will use some kind of remote device to see if the sensor itself is faulty.

Does this sound right to you guys?

Sometimes the tpms light will stay on for a little longer until it resets, regardless if the correct air pressure is in the tire. If it doesnt go away in a day or two then perhaps it may be a faulty sensor.

if your tpms light is on without hearing the BEEEEEEEEEP then you can fill em up (or get it patched etc) drive and itll reset

if you get the BEEEEEEEEP sound then tires really low on pressure and thats when the sensors need to be reset with a tool (bartech scanner) after being repaired of course

glacier you dont need to wait...use your trip go to the tpms and if you see a --- obviously a sensor is no longer reading...you can always reset the tpms by unplugging the cars battery as well...

Hey man, I have a 2008 model - I don't think the trip shows TPMS anymore. But I don't hear a beep either.

I think the tire shop is indeed going to use this "bartech" scanner to verify if the sensor is working.

So diconnecting the battery would also reset the sensor? Is there any negative side effects I should be aware of? How long should I wait before reconnecting the battery?
