Default Is this Bent Wheel Safe to Drive On? Need help Please

Hi everyone,

I'll get to the point and spare the backstory.

Can I get some input on the rim in the video? Is it safe to drive on?

The seller is saying it is completely safe to drive, the tire shop is saying absolutely not. Seller is accusing the Tire Shop of being inexperienced and not knowledgeable despite their 35 years of experience.

Many of you are truly expert, I am so far from not expert I can't see the horizon of expert from where I sit in my confusions. (obviously I'm believing the tire shop, but I'm objective..no one is infallible...so I thought this could be a mission for the Z-Team...you guys.

http://youtu.be/-OQlirDAevg

Thanks sincerely guys,

Jay

P.S. - I am brand new to the whole sports car scene. Z is my first sports car, LOVING it. Not a car guy by any means, but I'm learning.

doesn't look too bad. i drove on a bent wheel for 6 months and didn't have any issues. i'd suggest asking the seller to take the wheel to a repair shop and finding out if it's repairable (probably is) and how much it would cost.

As far asbeing safe to drive on.. yes. It wont balance tho so im sure you will feel its odd rotation and the tire will surely wear out faster. Id look into either buying one new wheel to coplete the set or if that rim can be reparied. Factor the price of that into thetotal cost to see if its still worth it to have a complete set

Drive...maybe....like just not getting on it daily driving....maybe. Anything besides that? like WOT or racing, ABSOLUTELY not. I'm not a pro but wouldn't do it, if you haven't bought them then I suggest you don't. You can get something better.

I would walk away. Will never balance out correctly & vibrations at higher speeds likely. Been through **** like this many times in the past .

It'll feel like you're constantly going over micro speed bumps. I'd worry more about your suspension and tires.

Thanks for the fast replies everyone. That's what I was thinking too....it's might be relatively "safe" to drive on for daily driving, but not safe to my suspension or tire wear in the long term, and certainly not safe at highway speeds or under duress.

I'm a daily driver, no drifting or racing, but would love to try it some day for fun at an actual track.

This rim in the video was from a drift car by the way. How does a rim get bent like this in the first place? Did he have to hit something? The rim has some curb on it, so it clearly took some grinding impact of some degree. Or would the curb rash not be the cause of bending the inside bead?

Thanks again...really love the learning and appreciate the help!

Jay

A bent wheel is easily fixable, take it to a reputable repairer and they can take care of it for you.

Any idea on what fixing a bent rim would run?

I have a feeling a second rim of this set is bent as well as it took over 3oz of weight to balance the rim. Cost of fixing two rims might make the deal not worth pursuing.

The other two rims took .75 and .25 oz to balance if I recall correctly.

Thanks Waizz,

Jay

If you're in So Cal you can search vendors that will repair wheels for a fair cost. That rim definitely looks repairable.

I'm not in SoCal, but thanks for suggestion.

Anyone have this done that can give me an idea of what's reasonable to pay?

I'm new at this, so I don't want to get gauged or misled.

Merry Christmas guys,

Jay

No problemo

My wheel guy only took a few days to fix it and it looked perfect afterwards.
