Splined Lug Nuts. Dumb Question.
I did do a search. Did not find the answer, probably because it is so dumb no one has ever asked it.
I just got a set of RPF1s. Will get long, open ended lug nuts since I'll probably get some ARP studs in the future.
Many of the ones I see, particularly Muteki, are splined. So here is the question: Can they be taken on/off with anything but the splined socket that is included? I'm just wondering because I know that if it is the only tool that will work I will lose it or it will roll down a storm drain, etc etc at the worst possible moment. I guess I could buy several of them, but if the splined nuts will only work with a splined socket, then I'll keep searching for a hex nuts.

i think it only works with those but there so abundant you could go to any tire shop and pick one up for a few bucks but there are other ways to bust them lugs or locks off off if you ever lost the key

You're right, but if the splined sockets are as easy to come by as everyone says then the combination would be 1-2-3-4.
But that brings up a question. Are the splined nuts purely for security? I assumed they were just a superior form of socket. If it is purely for security then I don't need them anyway. These will only be on at the track.

This is true of EXTERNAL splines (on the outside), since there are tons of these lug nuts out there. I have open ended INTERNAL splines and there aren't many of these on wheels...so not many keys for these around. Not as good as a locking system, but still a deterent to theft.

That particular one obviously does not, the photo was used as an example. They come in a variety of sizes.
Also OP, you can order specific sockets from Gorilla directly that are thin-walled and padded
