Some tire shops will not install tires if they "X" number of years old...I think it was 4 or 5 years.

Sort of old news.Has been well publicized.
When it comes to the tires we use(performance tires),there is less chance
of buying "old" tires that have been sitting in a warehouse for several years.
The media likes to blow this kinda stuff way out of proportion.
Anyway, its a good idea to do business with well known tire vendors.

Ive been buying used tires for my Z since i got it haha...usually for drifting, i have a nice collection in my backyard that i still havent burned up. Just recently picked up a set of some cheapo wanli tires that i got a screamin deal on new...so far so good haha

But i do believe this really more or less applies to average tires that consumers purchase and not so much high performance, or low profile tires...but then again who knows..

Anyone ever watch Chasing Classic cars on Velocity? The host will find cars that are over 40 years and take them out on a test drive on the original tires with flat spots.

I wouldn't take the risk with that age but I do have wheels with tires that I bought over 6 years ago and still drive on them once in a while.

LOL, who just went out to check the date on their tires? This guy did. I had tires on my old viper that I had to get rid of because they were 6 years old. Damn shame with only 10k miles but it's just not worth it in the long run.

+1

Purchasing tires from well known vendors helps decrease the chances of getting too old of a tire by a significant amount.

Definitely check the date on your tires!! My 03 had some 2005 take-offs with original tires on it when I bought it. The tires only had 4k on them - looked brand new. After a year, it finally hit me that I was driving on 7 year old tires... Put it up on a rack and sure enough, I had a 2 inch section of sidewall that was separating, and air bubbles in every single tire. Replaced all 4 then and there, and was VERY grateful nothing ever happened.

How are spare tires effected by aging? A good many Zs are driving around with 10-year-old (and counting) spares patiently waiting in the trunk. Some day they’ll get the call up for that high speed run to get back home.

When it comes to spares, the biggest problem them not having air. Even good tires leak a small amount of air. I checked the spares in both my cars. Perfectly good tires, both completely flat.

Wow, good catch! Lots of people don't realize how old tires can really affect them or others around them. This, combined with the sight of sparks coming from people's tires due to them riding on belts, is a pretty scary thought.
