17s the best way to go for any track type of racing?

keep the unsprung weight down.

 

they are a good choice not only because the may weigh less, but also becuase there are substantially more choices of 17" r-compound tires...

I run 275/40-17 Yokohama AO32R front and rear on 17x9 Enkei RPO2J wheels for driving events.

 

HOwever, In my search for used race tires (you can get full tread hoosiers for $75 if you look in the right place), it seems all the race teams have moved up to 18s! Just my luck , 1 year too late.

 

What's the right place to look for used race tires?
Wonder why they are moving to 18's.
