Default Thinking of going from 19 back to 18 wheels

Hi All,

Hit a pot hole today and killed a rim and rear tire. Tires only have 2,000 miles on them!

This is a rear tire and I have been running 32 PSI in them. Has anyone else went back to 18 after having 19 or larger rims? I bought this car used with these rims on them and this rim model has been discontinued so I most likely will get 4 new rims anyways. This car is a daily driver in the summer time.

Ouch, and you should have 35 psi.

You may be able to get it fixed or a replacement wheel

Not to be an ***, but Axis wheels are or were known for cracking easily. I think you may want to go back to 18" wheels.

I had 2 sets of 19s staggered and tires were eating at my budget. So, I recently went to 18x10.5 squared. I don't daily my car but I plan on rotating front to rear since tires are all 275/35s

Picture with blue wheels are 19s, red 18s. This is a common transition (although usually staggered 18s) for people who get more serious about tracking or similar

If it's a city road, you can contact the "city" and try and get them to pay for the fix.

+1
Search "craxis" lots of info.

Contacting the city worked... back in the 90s when the economy was good. Now you have to prove you gave the city adequate lead, about two weeks for them to fix it. If you did all that then hit the pothole you would have to prove it was the hole you notified them about to get anywhere.

im sure you've realized this by this time but still...your problem isn't that 19s are too weak to run for daily. the problem you ran into is that the 19s you had are poorly made. if you want to continue to run 19s, go with a reputable company like volk and you will run into a lot less problems.

Ordered new wheels and tires for my 350z.

I ordered:

XXR Series 521 F-GUN METAL w/Black 52188149 - 18" x 8.5" +25 for the front
XXR Series 521 F-GUN METAL w/Black 52180149 - 18" x 10" +25 for the rear
Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2 K120 1015252 - 255/40ZR18 XL
Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2 K120 1015257 - 275/40ZR18 XL

Please tell me this will fit with stock height. Also I could use a recommendation on tire pressure front and rear.

Thank you!

If cracking/bending your wheels is a concern, why buy XXR's?

True that. One of my wife's wheels cracked halfway through the barrel without hitting anything.

In my limited search I couldn't find any one talking about cracking on the XXR's specifically the 521's which I ordered.

Went to 19's! Haven't looked back! I just love them! Buy a good quality wheel and you should be pretty happy!

You will only find a few (if any really) articles about bad XXR wheels. But Z/G guys don't like'em cuz they've, on occasion, made replicas of Volks, Works, and SSR's. If you have a Z/G, you must be permanently affixed to the ***** or scrotal skin of Volks, Works, and SSR's.

Also, don't hit potholes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel your pain.

You REALLY hit hard, that wheel does not look repairable IMO.

Yah good luck with that.

True, but any low profile set up with 30 or 35 series sidewalls leaves very little protection for the wheel.

I hit a pothole in my sedan, and instantly knew it was bad, got out and looked and the barrel/rim was bent.

It is a $1500 Brabus wheel, so maybe that is why it only bent and didn't crack?

Anyways was able to repair for under $200, although I can see the repair, and I would never again in the future on any car run any size wheel that would require a 30 or 35 series sidewall tire.

Just not worth it, IMO.

As I understand it, 19" (vice 18") wheels and tires cost more, ride harder and are more prone to damage. Aside from a better appearance (to some), what are the advantages?

Go down to 17s and run fat tires, even more rubber protection.
