Default TPMS sensor: price vs function

The range of prices on the tire sensors is ridiculous... the dealer quoted me $160 a piece and yet they are all over ebay amazon etc $50 for four!?
I'm not a big fan of Chinese/Korean etc crap, but not a big fan of paying six times the price just to get a damned light to go off. I'm curious what the lowest price any of your have paid for these and had them still work.. allegedly they're supposed to last for 7 years give or take. Thanks! Example"

I had a replacement from rockauto, I think dorman, for around $30, used for more than 4 years (have since sold the wheel it was mounted in). Had it mixed in with OEM sensors, the tire pressure was always off by 1 psi, but it was consistently off so it served the function.

That's interesting! My primary goal was just to get the warning light off for resale purposes... I guess I hadn't even considered whether or not they were accurate because I'm smart enough to use a tire gauge, but that's a good warning to at least have them all the same brand/type for consistency. Thanks!

Tire rack sells replacement ones for $45-50 each, so far mine are doing OK, did notice it's off by 1-2 lbs but I wouldn't blame the sensor for that. IIRC my OEM ones weren't pin point accurate either.

Between the 20 degree swing of winter temperatures, whether or not the tires are warmed up and the bargain basement chinese tires that are on my Z I guess the TPMS is more of a toy than a necessity, but I just gotta fix stuff I know isn't right! LOL

IIRC the same conclusion was reached by nissan, to the point of removing the individual pressure monitoring on the later models and the 370z. If you are looking for the cheapest way to eliminate the light, if you disable the sensors completely the car does not throw a tpms light, the gauge just always remains in the -- warmup for all wheels but no light.

How do you disable? I've kind of assumed that with three out of four batteries dead, they were in effect disabled now. FYI: Just as a test, I pumped all four tires up from 35PSI to 40 in the 36 degree weather last week and the flashing PSI warning light on the multi function gauge did go off, even though the specific pressures remained off for 3 tires. Either way the exclamation point/tire profile warning light stays on... kinda tells me there are several "levels" if signal in the system. Thanks!

I did my first tire/wheel swap on my last existing Z the month after I got it in 2012. 20-some sets later, I still don't have TPM sensors in any wheels and have never had any undue lights on the dash.

Now my other Z33s, one was sensitive until I put a set of OE sensors in. ($55 on Fleabay) and the other, threw a momentary dash light when I swapped the wheels out then went off and hasn't turned back on.

Just glad it’s not like a C6 Vette that goes into limp mode with a TPMS fault

That was $55 for all four. Sometimes one finds some deals on EBay. Like my Nissan OE ignition coils at about 1/2 the price of everyone else. And yes, they were genuine Nissan parts. Haha.

But that was about 5-6 years ago.

Right now, a lot of stuff is NOT coming out of Japan as readily. (Bike parts for one.... Shimano has a 5-7 month backlog for their OE-to-mfgr parts - hence, bike shortage - and I've been told same for auto parts so everything may be ridiculously high during Covid times)

Ya, I've seen the same in consumer electronics, lumber, art supplies, watercraft parts etc... Curiously, while much of America is really hurting, the prices on some of these things is going through the roof and people (who still have money) are paying big bucks for them... which cycles nicely back to the exorbitant price I'm gong to ask for my Z convertible this summer! LOL Thanks for the info on the 4 for 55 and Nissan parts.. I guess that should/could have been a better way to phrase my initial question here; if they're good/reliable/genuine Nissan parts that list for $160 each, I certainly can't complain about 1/16 the price!

I bought a pair of 4 TPMS sensors from ebay for like 40-45$

I had them mounted on the wheels when i went to do a tire swap onto my new rims,
After i got home i did the TPMS sensor reset that is under the passenger dash,

You just need to set all 4 corners to the certain weight, turn on the car, tap the paperclip that you put inside the sensor, once the tire pressure light is blinking while the CAR is on, go drive to your closest gas station for roughly 1-3miles, the light will blink, reset, and stay on, go fill up the tires with air, drive home, light is gone

Wow.. never thought about staggered pressures like that!! Makes sense (in a sort of drifting/pitching it sideways sort of way) LOL ! Thanks.
