Default how wide on 8.5 wheel?

I have been told that I can go to 275 on an 8.5 " wheel and then I have been told that 265 is as wide as I can go. Does anyone know for sure how wide I can really go?

thanks!

no definitive answer there.

optimal would be 255 IMO. 265 and eve 275 would fit without any major problems. 285 and 295 would squeeze on there, but probably unsafe.

so.. which to get comes down to which best maintains stock diameter. 245/40/18 gives a good diameter size, but you could probably go up to 265/35/18 and be very close to the same still...

if you did 255/40/18 youd probably want to go to 285/40/18 in back to maintain the stagger.

confusing eh?

275 not recommended. 265 probably. 255 certainly. Per Tire Manufacturers - Range:
255 - 8.5-10" - Optimal 9"
265 - 9-10" - Optimal 9.5"
275 - 9-11" - Optimal 9.5"

Curious, similar topic, reverse direction. On 8.5" 19's and 9.5 19's rear, what is the most narrow one would go on the front, considering I am running 275/30/19's on the rear. Could I get away with 215/35/19's. The reason of course is cost, they are much cheaper. I need to run a pretty low aspect ratio to look right (ie sidewall hieght) which very much limits options. Also the load rating is 200lbs+ lower on the smaller width (than factory equiped), and I know the manufacturer does not like that.....still, can it work?
