Best bang for the buck performance tire?
Well i have held out long enough for new tires for my 18" wheels. The rears are bald, but they still stick, after 1.4 years of abuse. Ready to say good buy to the RE040's and get some new somethings. I don't need the best or most expensive. Just something that will still do it justice. What will you recommend? Thanks!!
Here are some comparative reviews of ultra high performance tires www.xrims.com
The Toyos are lightweight, like the Michelins, due to compound and construction, which is a positive consideration. They make a tuner brand, Nitto, which is worth checking out also. They have very high overall quality ratings.
The Stones are heavy, but perform well. Particularly if you need a tire that while it is a summer performance tire, can handle wet conditions too. Some of the summer tires (notably the BF Goodrich g force TA/KD) are potentially treacherous in the wet as a trade off to incredible grip in the dry. And some of the folks like the Dunlop's grip.
I personally have used the Michelins, Toyos and Bridgestones on this car (G35coupe) and think that the pilot sports are pretty darn good, just pricey. IF you are in an area that is wet a lot, or gets to temperatures below 45 degrees F in the winter, some of these tires are not safe as they lose their grip when the ambient temperature falls below that.
IF you want a DOT street legal track/race tire......the Toyo RA-1 is a very nice pair of shoes...but running on gummy bears like that will not take you very many miles.

Well, if you are looking for bang for the buck, go wit hteh Kumho Ectsa MX's. They are relatively cheap and really don't give up much to the Pilot sports that are $100 more per tire. They will be a little louder than the Pilots, but handling wise, they are very similar.
IMO, Dunlop SP9000s have the best cost/performance ratio. I love my set. However, they don't make a 225/45/18. So, you have to use a 245/40/18 in front with either a 245/45/18 or 255/45/18 in the rear. These sizes retain the stock stagger. This is not a bad thing, the understeer will be greatly reduced, and the overall handling greatly increased.

i seem to got myself in the same boat. I want a good performing tire for a decent price. i got my list narrowed down to these possible choices:
Toyo Proxes T1S
Nitto 555
Pirelli P-Zero Neros M+S
Kumho Ecsta MX
or i may just go ahead and splurge a bit and get the Potenza S0-3
opinions??

For the S0-3's I am very happy with mine. Like I said before, about the same performance as the Pilots, but much cheaper. Of course, if wear is an issue, stay away!!
I replaced the pilots at 15K miles (should have done it at 12K since the wear bars just started to show), and I have about 5K on the S0-3's and they look like they aren't going to last until they have 15K on them. My next set of tires is going to be an all season high performance tire. Probably the Continental ContiExtremeContact or the Yokohama AVS dB S2. Hopefully i will get a little better wear out of them, they will be quieter on the road, and I can actually drive the car in the light snow!!!

The best price performance tire is the Hankook Ventus K104.
This tire is based on a proven racing tire design with an aggressive street compound.
I have the K104's in 245x45x18 on all four corners, with just over 8000 miles on them including 4 track days. I've race on the Hankook Ventus Z211 and was impressed with the performance. So I got a set of K104's for my Z and I'm also impressed with the street and track performance.

on 1010tires.com there are numerous user reviews for the tires. Based on that I got myself Toyo T1S. Kuhmo is cheaper, but there are quite a fiew complaints. Others max performance tires are ridiculously expensive.
