Question Excessive Tire Road Noise

I love to listen to the exhaust but lately it seems the tires have been getting louder and louder and very distracting, especially slowing down. I only have 8k miles on my Z so I'm still running the stock Bridgestones, 225s/245s. Anyone else notice this, and did upgrading to a better tire make signficiant difference?

You might want to have the wheel bearings checked and repacked on your next brake service. Just an idea.

Feel the inside of your front tires tread. I'd bet good money you've got the feathering problem.

Is it mostly under about 35 mph that it's loud?

Aren't we supposed to teach him a Secret Feathering Club handshake? EZCHIEF has been introducing new members of the club with that handshake. I think it goes like this:

Start with two shakes, then the hands go to the ears, and give the best growl with your lips shaped in an "O".

I can't comment on the tire feathering issue, since I did not experience that problem. However, changing my tires did make a difference in lowering road noise.

Owners of other cars (Mazda & Lexus) that use the same tire report excessive tire noise after about 5000 miles of use. You may or may not have the feathering problem.

Angry OH S&^$%#@#!

Went home last night and checked my tires and you guys are correct. I am now a fully vested member of the F****n Feathering Club. Geez, I really didn't even know I applied for membership! Using the old weight on a strin method it Looked like there is about an inch differnce from the top to the bottom of the tire, ie, toe in at the top. So, if I can the dealer to realign properly to eliminate the toe in, will it hold up or will I need cambers too?

The difference your talking about (top to bottom on the tire) is the camber not the toe. Toe is the distance/angle the front wheels are off of straight ahead. You cannot adjust the camber on the Z without some sort of camber kit. The only adjustment is the toe.

Thanks for the clarification. I have an appt with the dealer on Monday. Service guy says they are aware of it and have new alignment specs from Nissan that is supposed to correct the toe in problem. We'll have to see. So is that amount of camber sound normal?

Hey all....

I have a 2003 Touring Z I bought in March of '03.

I have both "feathering/scalloping" as the dealer calls it along with excessive road/tire noise. Had it in 3-4 times already. The dealer cross mounted the front tires, and it went away for a awhile, but it's slowly coming back, and worse. Nothing more they can do.......

I found this one site pretty informative if you want to check it out......can't hurt to put your name in, right?

My thinking is that if I ever go to sell it with the tire/road noise issue, who would want it?.....

Has anyone noticed that the Wear Rating on the stock tires is 140? What kind of crap is that? Weak.

Actually 350Z Sales were of 1000 units in January and February

That should be enough to say there is a problem.. 60,000 sold as of November 2003..

I'm coming up on 30K (25K) Mine are feathering again. Had the TSB done @19K. Still have a ton of tread left BTW.

Will be getting new tires soon.
