Default My Rear Mount Turbo Fabrication

Hey all!
Been watching boosted probe / performance thread for 6 months + and that inspired me to go play with my welder again.

My plan was to steal his location & plans but i'm just not that good (who is!)

So i was then going to steal the sts ideas and fab up one of these:

Which given the space back there after pulling the muffler out is pretty easy.

So i made a template of the exhaust for sizing everthing up and made up some cardboard pipe templates of what curves i had (rather than cutting up the pipe at first) and came up with this
[EXCUSE the welds - this is cheap aluminized pipe and my welder was blowing holes through the pipe walls - will redo in some nice stainless once it all fits
(and my welding skills are a bit rusty/nonexistant and if you're going to judge me by boosted P's welds than i'm screwed already!)]

[realized that i set the date wrong last time i replaced camera batts]

So was mimicing the STS kit and was trying to understand why they would have the exhaust make 2 extra 90 turns and go in the back of the turbo ( well have the inlet facing rearwards as there
really is no front / back ) so i turned it around and had it run right into the 'front' and got rid of the two 90 turns. This swapped the outlets turbo exhaust at the leftside and wastegate out the rightside (from rear of car)

and from the bottom rear can just see the bottom of turbo - hangs down less than the muffler does now (this was before the wastegate was tacked on)

laying out the wastegate flow path

where i am now
going to plate off the wastegate outlet to 2.5 inch tubing
it's just tacked together at the momemt so i can get everything aligned ( ie both exhaust tips pointed approximatly in the same direction!)

Just need some more power when running around my favorite track!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emlw3EOL5XA

I've ran there with my cheap-*** BBK with minimal issues for 2+ years

https://my350z.com/forum/brakes-and-...udget-bbk.html

Off to go work on the oil supply - making a 3 quart rear sump/tank with motul oil pump (~55psi) that just recircs back there - running ~ 24 feet of oil line to the rear seemed a tad dangerous:
1. if it fails it could take the engine out too
2. when its running it is stealing oil pressure/supply that the engine needs even more while running with boost
have an oil temp and an oil pressure gauge to monitor that along with a boost gauge - will add an oil cooler if it runs too hot
i don't think i'll need an egt gauge as these rear mounts run much cooler?
[so cool that i will wrap the entire exhaust when it's done]

& something to watch as you wait for updates

Thanks man. I don't think you are the only one that tried to "steal" my "ideas"

Either way, good luck with your build, just make sure you have no exhaust leaks before the turbo. Also, I would make sure to get a good wastegate. The BOV IMO does not "need" to be expensive and ebay is a good option for this. The w/g however is exposed to much harsher environments, and "should" be of good quality.

With my turbo placement, fabrication is much more complicated because of the exhaust stuff. It is very tight under there.

What turbo/specs do you have there. I see it is an S compressor cover, but that is about it. I think your turbine sizing will play a huge roll in how it spools, do to the distance from engine.

Also, I still have the IC piping from my old setup. I managed to get the 2.5" pipe through on the passenger side;

Couple of pics for reference:

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...oilpump001.jpg

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...oilpump002.jpg

I think STS uses 2.0" tubing through that secion.

I don't use any of it, it is just sitting in the garage attic, so if you want it let me know.

Save you some time....

Awesome work I wish I had the tools to do my own welding when I built my rear mount. DIY FTW!

The oiling is the hardest part of doing a rear mount setup(in my experience), I spent a long time trying to perfect it.

Thanks to all for the interest!

And Boosted P. - don't think that i don't have every one of your build pics downloaded to a folder on my comp for intense studying!

& thanks for the pipe offer - i've got about 20 feet of assorted aluminum pipe so i hope i'm good.

as i am in mock up mode i became joe ebay for a while

godspeed gt35r sized turbo - it seems to even have some hub grinding as if someone at least pretended to balance it?
who knows it might hold up for my low temp / low boost. (also another reason for the seperate oil supplies)

mocal ( not motul) oil pump

all the oil supply parts - the tee is for the oil pressure gauge sender

making the tank - and some practice bead making!
2x4 inch x 24 inches = ~ 3 quarts of oil

i'm getting good - can pull the muffler out in 3 bolts / ~ 5 mins - i did cut the ends off the bars that go through the rubber hangers so they slide in / out better
so far all my prior upgrades and now this has the plan that i can toss all the oem parts back on to take advantage of my 100K mile extended warranty

the big 3" 90 bend intake tube is a work in progress - will probably just cut a straight leg off and have the air filter up at the top with a bottom splash shield - if i get really clever down the road i'll make an airduct/scoop for track days!

the fab shop... okay the garage floor...

fitting up the wastegate dump pipe - will make it prettier later -
this hangs down a bit (still higher than exhaust pipes) but i may have to
make some sort of shield so it doesn't look too crappy from the back.

this is the from the back at the moment (w/g piece not on yet)

the wastegate looks pretty solid for ebay stuff - nicely formed aluminum - looks to be real a silicone pressure diaphragm - adjustable springs - the parts move with a bit of pressing/pressure

4" by 17 x 7 generic interfooler / ebay bov - (less solid than the w/g) / ebay boost controller / summit racing branded bargain gauges
some exhaust elbows / a cheap I/C 2.5" kit plus some extra 24" straights to run up from the rear
~$1050 into it sofar -

[copy/pasted from my ebaypage]
the mocal and some summit / jegs stuff aren't there

already had a cobb accessport / accessrace tuner software so will tune / monitor things with that (it can watch/log the afr)
plan on disabling the oem fuel pressure regulator and getting an adjustable one which 'should' cover my minimal goals - also if needed will add a hobbs /pressure controlled 7th (and 8th !)
fuel injectors directly into the intake plenum to add fuel at wot (aka what some supras do)

(keep an eye out for the blown up engine thread!)

the track vid was last month at sebring ( hence the video named sebring...)
the p carrera later spun out badly and needed to be towed off track!
(any florida peeps PM me if you want to go - it's a very easy going group of drivers so a good way to start off at track days - i usually get ~70 (3.7 mile) laps in per day)
my next day is june 13th - so i gots to get moving if i want to blow stuff up by then!
back to the hot garage....

Awesome work, so it looks like your going with 2.5" charge piping from the turbo to the intercooler? I envy you there lol. I wish I was able to do that, only way I can do it is via oval piping. Wondering how the spool up will be with 2.5" piping.

This is last detail stuff, but any plan to wrap your headers and catback? I considered it a requirement in my book when it comes to RMT.

you will need some kind of oil cooler if you aren't ciruclating it to the engine. Oil coming off of a turbo is extremely hot and it wont cool at all if its just sitting in a tank. When it circulates in the engine of a car it is cooled off quite a bit from the heads being cooled via cooling system.

also, you can't "disable" the fuel pressure regulator on our fuel pumps and just throw in an adjustable one. You would have to switch to a return fuel system in order ot use an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

good work though! should be a nice project.
