I know it's possible to install aftermarket cruise control on GM, Ford, and other american made vehicles, so I assume its equally possible on the Z (if a company even makes a kit to do so...).

Here is my predicament - my highway miles are about to grow exponentially as I transfer schools across the country and have to do a substantial amount of commuting. I have an 06 base coupe w/o CC, and I need factual reasoning as to why its impractical/illogical (if it is?) to install an aftermarket CC on the Z. Trying to get evidence to promote a swop to an enthusiast/touring model.

Any help guys?

 

I don't know about the Z but I saw a aftermarket cruise controlon a civic before and the unit itself looks hideous! it's a lot bigger than you expect and takes up a lot of room. This thread remind me to tell my touring I love her more often.

 

They don't make after market CC for the Z. I feel your pain, I have a base as well and when I come home some weekends from college my *** hurts really bad on the way because my right foot is in the same position for so long

While the drive by wire would make it easy to integrate for a company willing to make one, nobody makes one yet. With CC available from the factory, I am sure the aftermarket figures its not worth their time.

There are about a dozen threads started by people looking for CC for their base, one thread by a guy who said he was going to do it jacking onto the gas pedal inside the car but after some talk, he never came back with finished results. Who knows, he may have done it, or given up.

Actually they do make it. In europe i found drive by wire cc listed for a 350z on a euro site that was dbw, i just have not got around to contacting them yet as im going to try and pin the computer with some cruise control parts out of a cc steering wheel.

 

I'll believe CC can be added when someone posts he has done it & results can be verified.

 

^^^^ How true. After 4 years of this being debated, there has not been one person to post that they have actually come up with a solution. And when you consider the ingenious solutions we see here for dozens of other problems, you have to believe if it was possible that somebody would have got it done by now.

I know this is not what anyone would want to do, but when I was shopping for my Z, I almost got a base model without CC and I asked the same thing. The salesman told me it would be no problem for the dealership to add CC, but that it would not be integrated into the steering wheel. He was probably saying this just to get me to buy the car, and I don't think I would have let them do it for fear of them making my car look like garbage, but if you really want CC you could ask your dealership. Thankfully I picked up a touring model with CC for near the same price.

 

yeah, its not really a big deal no having it but if it isnt hard to add I would go for it. Seems like it can't be done from numerous threads about it with no avail. Someone call the dealer and ask them! haha

 

It wouldn't be all that hard to make one, but I think the problem lies in lack of interest. Most cars that are sophisticated to have DBW systems already come with cruise control.

You mix a relatively small market with a high amout of liability and you have a product that most companies wouldn't have an interest in.

I had an '05 Ford F150 base model work truck that was DBW without cruise control. On that vehicle it was as simple as swapping the steering wheel out and having the cruise control option turned to 'on' in the PCM software (dealership charged $100 to do it).

The cool thing about DBW is that it is all computer controlled, making it very easy to enable it without having to add actuators.

 

probably, but you're better off just getting an enthusiast.
